Shirley and I decided to go to Salou in June 2004. Neither of us had been to Salou before, but my sister had been there a couple of years reviously. There were 2 main reasons for selecting Salou. Firstly, it was within an hour's train ride of Barcelona, and secondly the Port Aventura theme park was on the doorstep.
Salou itself is a lovely holiday resort which has seemed to quietly survive the tackiness of other Spanish holiday resorts, and also their decline. It has also managed to avoid the swarms of drunken teenagers that often pollute the shores of some other towns. Salou's beach, promenade and shopping areas are all well kept and clean.
With Port Aventura being on the outskirts of town, a lot of families come here. This creates a gentler atmosphere in the town itself.
I would definitely go back to Salou as it is one of the few Spanish resorts I have been to that makes you relax and not feel as if you have to be drinking lager or singing Karoke all day!
