UNKNOWN SPAIN
by caf98
"SANABRIA NATURE PARK"
Usually, Spain is only knowed for the bullfighters, the sun, and a international alcholic drink: the sangria
But Spain has a lot of different regions and unknown places, only visited by the nature lovers or history researchers.
There is a place in the northwest corner, just before Galicia, between Leon and Portugal which is quite impresive. The nature park of Snabria. There remain the last wolves which run free in the coubtry. Also, as it was createby the force of the ice (in the last glaciation), there is full of lakes and wide valleys where some people go skiing.
"PUEBLA DE SANABRIA"
Puebla is the main town of the region. Placed on a hill, over an ancient celtic town, has a lot of beautiful and well mantained streets. There are also a Castle of the XV th century and a Church of the same century.
You can get to Puebla by the highway which goes from Madrid to Orense. This is the starting point of the route.
"SAN MARTIN DE CASTANEDA"
From Puebla to San Martin we drive by a narrow road passing through an oak forest completely different form the permanent image of the dry Spain.
We cross also some other interesting villages until we arrive to San Martin(1200 meters high). There we can visit the Museum of the Park, a benedictin monastry of the XII th century.
We can also go along the road to a lake called Laguna de los Peces, which is placed at 1600 meters.
"HIKING"
The Park has a lot of marked and non-marked paths, which allow to reach the most spectacular places of the park and the highest peaks (Trevinca Mountain 2030 meters high). You can get this information in the museum of Sant Martin. You can also ask in the tourist office of Puebla.
Finally, you can do water sports in the lake, the main atracction of the park. Ribadelago, a village placed in the shore of the lake could be an interesting point of acces to visit the lake.

Very warm. Haven't stayed at the hotel but the town is purpose built for beach loving tourists and adjacent to a huge petrochemical industry which you won't notice till you travel.
Your proximity to Barcelona means you will undoubtedly visit there and I can recommend going by train. The route is very scenic.
I only stayed a week in shoulder season but, depending on what you want to do, you shouldn't have any trouble with night life.
Cheers, Ian

Have been to Spain many times and always drive from Englan through France End June/early July is great time to be there. It is sunny and warm (maybe 27 degrees) Have also been when rain at this tiem but this is only ever for a couple of days & you can always sit in bar, eat tapas and drink sangria so who cares.
Visited Salou 3 years ago - not quite for me as too commercialised but if that's what you want fine. Not been to hotel you are staying at though. We stayed in Cambrils which is about 15 mins along coast and much more real Spain feel to it so go and have a look - we loved it.
Port Adventura is a great day out & good rides so do visit. Beach was massive, clean and well maintained - have a great time

Hi
Stayed at the Los Peces in May. Would have been o.k if the apartment had been cleaned before we arrived. We spent the first day of our holiday washing floors and the balcony. The patio furniture was filthy and unusable. However, some of the apartments looked alright. When we arrived there weren't any bath towels only hand towels and when I went to ask for some I was told that we could only have the hand towels so it might be a good idea to take your own bath towels just in case. There was a washing machine and fridge freezer which was handy. The pool area is very small and also open to the public if they buy a drink at the snack bar (a van that serves people walking by and also serves people by the pool). The apartments are well situated for the bars and restaurants and it's only a short stroll to the beach which is lovely with beach bars every few hundred yards. There is a bar next door (Fox and Hounds) which serves nice food and stays open until about 2 a.m. Hope this helps. Have a good holiday.
Sonia.
