Some advice please

by amarshak

Hi everyone

Me and my family are coming over to Barcelona in July next year. I have 4 young kids 13,11,6 and 2 years of age and will be staying in Tarrogona and doing a bit of travelling to Barcelona and also going to Port Aventura.

My question is what do you recommend and the cheapest travel as i have 4 kids
and also do you recommend that we buy our Port Aventura tickets over the
internet or is it cheaper to buy at the theme park.

We live in Glasgow Scotland and if you would like anything bought over please
let me know and we could meet up in Tarrgona or Barcelona and exchange our culture.

I hope to hear from you soon

Trains are your best option for convenience and price. The kids like them too. There might be special coach service (bus) to Port Aventura, otherwise you can take the train. Use the train when visiting points north.

Tarragona is a lovely town with lots of historical sites, but, as I remember it, not a lot to interest the young ones. The beaches will probably be your best bet and there are a lot to choose from in the area.

July is very hot in Spain, so protect the kids (and yourself) with hats and suntan cream, and bring always water with you.

The train company "Renfe" has special tickets that include the train trip + Port Aventura ticket, but I couldn't find the departures from Tarragona, only from Barcelona. Maybe the best option is asking directly at the train station. Pay special attention to the timetables, as the last train departs before the park close.

If you go to Barcelona, do not miss the bar "El Bosc de les Fades" the children will love it! It's in the Ramblas, at the wax museum. It's a little bit hidden, you have to go go trough the first door of the wax museum (the one that is in the street) and at your right will appear a little street, the bar is there.

They would like too the Zoo, the Aquarium, the Tibidabo (a very old amusement park), the Parc Gúell and the Magic Fountain, in Montjuic.

I'm sorry, I can't give you advises about Tarragona, as I don't know it so well, but it's a wonderful that you're going to enjoy a lot.

Travel Tips for Tarragona

Adjusting to "Spanish Time"

by DSwede

Lunches typically start around 1pm with service ending around 4pm. The restaurants are then usually shut (unless you’re in tourist area) until ~9pm. An early dinner is 9pm, but commonly 11pm. Many bars don’t open their doors until midnight, and if you find one that opens before, it’s guaranteed that you will be the only people there. Discos typically do not really start until 3am and go until the sun rises.

Classical cats

by Ekaterinburg

What is it about ruins and cats ? No matter how magnificent the classical ruins you are visiting, there are always a couple of cats enjoying the facilities for free and looking down their noses at those people who actually had to pay to get in. Well Tarragona is no exception and its fine Roman ruins all have cats as fixtures and fittings. These three were basking on some of the remains of the Roman circus near Placa dell Sedassos. They are wearing their camo-fur coats so you have to click to see them .

roman aqueduct

by doug48

the pont de les ferreres is a roman aqueduct built in the 1st century AD. it is located in a very nice park with walking trails. a worth while side trip from the town of tarragona. the aqueduct is about three miles west of tarragona on hwy N240 in the direction of valls.

Amfiteatre

by balieyes

This Amphitheater is located by the sea, outside the old Roman city. Most probably it was constructed in the first or second century of our era. Inside this amphitheater you can see the remains of the church constructed in memory of 'Sant Fructuos'. This Saint was killed in the arena, which in the 7th century became a sacred Christian temple

Casa Museu de la Castellarnau

by mikey_e

If you're into the lives of the rich and famous of 19th Century Catalunya, a trip to the Casa Museu de la Castellarnau is a must on any trip to Tarragona. The house itself is a mansion built in the Middle Ages, but the interior is stacked with decorations and furniture from the 18th and 19th century. There are, however, some interesting medicine chests and bottles that pre-date the majority of the museum's collection. The dining room is especially impressive, although the kitchen provides the visitor with more information about life before electric appliances. There is also a tapestry in the foyer donated to the museum by the famed Catalan artist Miró.
