My daughter will be attending college in Murcia this winter 9 Jan - May.
I will go and visit her in February and was ppanning on poicking up a car at the airport. Any suggestions as to a local company that might have better rates than the big guys? Also, If you have been in teh area for Carnival do you a a specific community in mind that is a great place to experience it?

If you look on the Spanish airports website it will give you some information about car rental companies. www.aena.es English version available for each airport.
One rental company that I have used is called www.carjet.com and they can offer (as brokers) some good deals in Andalucia, but I don't know your airport specifically.
if you can go in march you can see the fallas one of the best things you will ever see there.
I had never heard of the Fallas before. The photos on Wikpedia are incredible.
I think my Daughter might be getting homesick by then however so February is probably when we will go. Another friend of hers will be visiting in March however so I will pass this on.

Regarding Carnival, google for the festivals in Sitges and Vilanova i la Geltrú. Depending of how many days you have to play with, these may be feasible from Alicante. Both Carnivals are very different but both are great fun, and both towns are less than 10 Km apart so it's easy to combine both in one weekend.
In Benidorm you must try cafe called John and Jose's for a light snack and there is a Chinese restaurant just along the road on same side which is of a good standard
and incredibly cheap (£2 for 3 course meal honest ).
For really good food try various restaurants in the old town In Benidorm the beer is generally quite cheap when you stick to the local brew from the tap.
If you hire a car you can travel to Mojacar which is about one hours drive from Bolnuevo. The picture of the superb villa is one we booked but we cancelled to go to florida instead.
The Villa was quite hard to find ,it was up a very steep mountain. We didn't think we would have been happy there as we like to have something to do than just sunbathe.The villa was in the middle of nowhere.
Maybe one day we will go when we have quietened down.
PAELLA... you can find 2 recipes in English in the BBC Food web page: http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/db/3/P/paella_7100.shtml and http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/db/2/P/paella_4974.shtml ... well there are many styles and I don't know if those are thae best (I don't think so, but at least it's in English).
The Alicante tram is operated by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Valencia (FGV), also responsible for the Valencia Metro. It is commuting to El Campello to the north and until Puerta del Mar by La marina to the south. The FGV is still expanding and have some projects on the move.
This is the main promenade in Alicante, parallel to the port. It is a favorite place to walk. In the 50’s, when there were less distractions, many couples met here, walking up and down.
It was constructed upon the old mole. 6 million tiles were used to create a wavy pattern combining red, white and blue pieces. Palm trees in four lines flank the center and lateral walks along all its length, offering the most representative image of the city.
