First time in Alicante!!!

by clarecas

Hi all,

I'm heading to Alicante next week with a bunch of friends and it's my first time in Spain. Just wondering if anyone had any pointers? Is there any food I should definitely try? Or beaches, clubs, historical sites that are a must?
I'm very excited about this trip but totally clueless, any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a million,

Clare

Re: First time in Alicante!!!

by raquelitalarga

Hi Clare
Though I only spent 2 days in Alicante recently I have some recommendations for the city and a couple of more general tips:)
First food... if you've checked the VT restaurant tips you'll maybe have noticed the 3 Lizarran tapas bars get a big thumbs up. My aunt and uncle live nearby and always head to a Lizarran when in the city. I found the city a little expensive so was especially glad to find a fantastic (but cheap)lunch menu at Mare Meua (see my Alicante page.) A general tip about tapas bars in Spain is DON'T be put off if there are loads of paper napkins all over the floor. It doesn't mean it's dirty just very popular and waiters and cooks are so busy they don't have time or the room to keep running out with a broom:)
The moorish Santa Barbara castle dominates the city. The marina area is really pretty with lots of places to have a coffee or glass of wine but from what I saw being served the food looked a little average.
Tourist Info should give you details about the roman city being excavated at the end of the tram line. El Barrio is the small historic quarter with lots of bars and clubs. If you're looking for presents the Alicante region is the home of turron,a nougat traditionally eaten at Christmas.
One warning...I did see posters warning visitors about bagsnatchers and lack of police interest in the problem.
Hope you have a great time!

The Best Fitness Centre in Alicante

by BlackTshirt

It's called Alisport, and is a complex of fitness machines, weights, tennis and raquetball, swimming pools, saunas, and also features a full jacuzzi, its own cafe, and tons of classes. Located a couple of blocks toward the Serra Grossa from the Gran Via shopping centre in Vistahermosa.

Motorcycle - I have been to...

by Kettleman

Motorcycle - I have been to this area several times by motorcycle.

From the UK it's a long haul of about 1500kms and so the journey down has to be part of the holiday and not extra to oit. But that's why we are motorcycle tourers!

To cut down on the riding and the costs of overnight stops and fuel, both French Railways (SNCF)and Belgian Railways (SNCB) have a weekly motorrail service to Narbonne in south-west France. Both services are traceable though Yahoo! search engines.

I've used SNCF from Calais and from Paris several times and although it does cost marginally more than the combined overnight hotel/food/fuel of riding all the way, it does get you there overnight whilst you sleep! More time in your destination!
Motorcycle - if you came down on it, then you'd be plain dumb to leave it at your hotel (or wherever) and use public transport.

You can park anywhere you like unlike police-state Britain where can hardly find a motorcycle parking space and the streets are covered in yellow 'no parking' lines!!!!

GO TO DENIA

by MaheshSamtani

Denia is a nice costal town just 80 kilometres north to the city of Alicante and has a lot to offer. Just to tempt you with a few of its attraction, I would mention its 20 kilometres of beaches, some of which are practically solitary and others that offer a variety of sports activities, some beaches with big extensions of golden sands and other with rock coves.

Denia enjoys good climate practically throughout the year. For nature lovers you can go to the Montgo natural park. The city is full of nice restaurants and shopping areas.

Many foreigners choose the coast of Denia to live as their second residences. It therefore would not be a mistake to take a day to go to Denia. there are many ways of going to Denia, hire a car, go by bus or probably the best option would be to use the train service which moves on narrow gauge rail and you can enjoy some very spectacular coastal views.

TOWN HALL SQUARE

by Hosell

If you are visiting the Town Hall another good idea if you are tired of walk too much,is stop on this small and nice square just in front of Town Hall. Here you'll find also some shops and two small bars to have a nice and cold or hot drink.

Casa Carbonell

by Aitana

This house was built in the first half of the XX century. They say that a businessman called Carbonell arrived to Alicante, dirty and ragged after an eventful journey. He intended to register in a nearby hotel but the concierge despised him. Then he decided to build such a house to outshine the hotel. He bought the plot where the market had been and ordered to build this house that is, in my opinion, the most beautiful that stands now in Alicante.
