by sandygirl1

Hi, I'm going to Benidorm on Saturday and wondered if there are any beauticians in the Levante area where I would be able to get pedicure/french manicure/massage? Many thanks in advance!

Benidorm Better Than the Press Say

by Davebeni

"Exploding the myhths"

With so many articles written about Benidorm by people who usually have never actually visited the town it is time to blow away the myths created over the years of larger louts and the worst of the Brits abroad. The truth is that Benidorm is a Spanish tourist resort frequented by mainly Spanish visitors who are always out numbered by foreigners. There is of course an area of the town which does have mainly British bars and where you would be hard pressed to find anything Spanish, but this only represents 20% of the town. The rest is an ever changing mix of culture and traditions from every region of Spain.

When the tourist boom began at then end of the 1950´s workers from all over Spain arrived and with them came their local traditions, food and fiestas. This you can still find in abundance if you are the type of traveller who likes to get under the skin of places you visit. Where better to find this than in the Old Quarter of Benidorm where you will find dozens of Spanish restaurants offering the infamous " Tapas " and " Menu Del dia " for which Benidorm is so well known by the Spanish visitor. One such must visit place is Plaza Constitucion where you can soak up the (very load) atmosphere and sample all manner or regional delights where the locals go to snack before they go to dine. Follow the crowds from 10pm through the arch and down Tapas alley as it is known to hear, see and smell the aromas from all corners of Iberia including the finest red wines available. You will not be told this in the brochures.

If a beach holiday as all you want Benidorm has the finest but do take one day out and hire a car to see some of the best of Spain which is only a short drive away. Within 30 minutes of Benidorm you will find such treasures as the Jalon valley famous for wine, almonds and of course fantastic food. Every small town and village has a local restaurant where a 3 course feast of locally produced food with wine will only set you back 15€. Along the way you will come across miles of vineyards, almond groves and centuries old villages each one worthy of a stop and a stroll. The Jalon valley is easy to find simply head toward Valencia on the 332 and take a left where you see the sign for Jalon shortly after passing Calpe.

Another trip well worth considering is to head into the mountains toward Finestrat. Here you can spend a few hours following signs for Alcoi the old capital of the region and famous for producing linen. The drive through this area is a world away from Benidorm and yet only a short drive to sample real Spain. Rich in history which you will discover if you take time to enjoy the winding roads dotted with tiny vilalges in this mountain region on your doorstep.

Living in Benidorm with all the richness found locally can give an unexpected edge to any holiday if you are prepared to " go local " and get off the tourist track. Culture, cuisine and history on your doorstep. Benidorm has hidden treasures often overlooked and overshadowed by the big tourist machine but it is there if you are prepared to go find it.
