Fallas in Denia
You may think this festival is quite mad.
The locals spend thousands of euros building statues made of wood and plaster of Paris, erect them in the street, and on the last night, they are all burnt. The bomberos have to spray the buildings to stop them catching fire!!
The Fallas are usually satyrical representations of modern day politicians, celebrities, or happenings
However, Fallas indicates the start of Spring. It stems from the custom when carpenters used to spring clean their workshops, throw the rubbish into the street and burn it.
Be in town for the mascletas...fireworks set off for noise rather than oooh aaah spectacle. The figures are always burnt on the night of 19th March, St joseph's Day, and it really is an amazing spectacle.
Try and catch some of the parades too and see all those taking part dressed in traditional costume...You can find more info on my site...www.tuktuktours.co.uk
Valencia is really the place to be for Fallas, but crammed with people and it's difficult to get about there.
