City hotels without surprises

by DanielF about nh-hoteles

The nh-hoteles chain, specialised in business hotels, is nowadays present in all of Western Europe and part of the rest of the world, but the high standards of comfort and good value for money that made it famous are best appreciated in its Spanish hotels.

The most recommendable hotels are the ones included in the "selección oro", usually located in historic buildings with privileged locations and with higher levels of service.

For lower budgets, they offer the so called "express" hotels, located usually in the suburbs o f the cities and with a more basic comfort in the rooms, but with very interesting prices. They can be found in almost every Spanish city and they are all decorated in the same sober and elegant style, provide a good breakfast buffet and an amazing number of amenities for the price they charge.

Lemon Express

by rachel_sun

The Lemon Express is the oldest tourist train in Spain. Its been around since the 1920's.Since it has been completely done up and now has a toilet and buffet car.The Spanish Government of Valencia own it.The trip leaves Benidorm railway station and goes through places such as Altea, Calpe,Benissa and Teulada and arrives in Gata De Gorges about an hour and 20 mins later.During the journey you will have guides telling you about the area and you will have loads of time to take pics etc.The train even slows down at the nicest stops.
While in Gata people can visit a guitar factory and wonder around the town which is worth seeing for its whicker ware.I enjoyed the huge range of shops here.Especially the ethnic style ones.On the return trip the drink starts flowing.Champagne and soft drinks are served the entire trip back.My fav part ;-)
There is a great happy atmosphere with music and this makes a great end to a great trip.Well worth doing.Tickets are sold at travel agencies and hotels. You can also call Benidorm railway station to book tickets.

Glacier Express; a long, slow...

by Candy321

Glacier Express; a long, slow train trip from Zermot to San Maritz, Switzerland. This is difficult as we were there for a month. Staying in a 1600's castle for a week was one of our favorites.

Glacier Express

by jamiejetset

My husband and I have made reservations on the Glacier Express from Zermatt to St. Moritz. Interested to hear about your experience.

Also, any recommendations for spas and/or spa treatments in St. Moritz? We would like to spend 1/2 day being pampered after two weeks of traveling!

Thank you.

Re: Glacier Express

by Maurizioago

I caught the bernina Express some time ago; from Tirano; Italy. The landscape is beautiful. Unfortunately it rained all day.

Saint Moritz is a very beautiful town. There you can take a lot of pics . The houses and hotels in S. Moritz are pieces of art. Decorated with wood!!!

In S. Moritz there is also a lake. I haven't been there due to a lack of time...and also of the bad weather.

I hope to go back there soon.

Ciao!

Cashing American Express Travellers' cheques

by elcbw

We would appreciate if any VT members can advise us on (1) Whether it is convenient to use American Express travellers' cheques in Europe (London, France, Italy and Austria) (2) if so, where is the best place to cash them, banks or foreign exchange kiosks to get the best exchange rates and (3) if there is anything we should know in terms of tourist trap etc in cashing travellers' cheques?

Thanks in advance for answering.

Re: Cashing American Express Travellers' cheques

by grandmaR

It will probably not be convenient to use travelers checks in dollars in England. What most people do is use ATM machines to get cash.

Banks will charge a Euro 2.80 minimum fee at the rates change per day.

Travellers checks themselves are a "tourist trap"--they became passe many years ago! A few hundred $ or pounds in cash and an ATM card are what you want! Even Russia has ATMs. And Russian cash exchanges want cash, not checks!

Re: Cashing American Express Travellers' cheques

by globetrott

Traveller checks are good for their safety and to have some extra, safe money, just in case of an imergency.

And they are a really good business for the banks :
1st they charge You, when you buy them.

then you pay high fees , when you cash them !

in Austria, they charge 15 euros per transaction up to 500 Dollars.

ATM-machines are better and cheaper !

You are mistaken if you think TCs are always safer. I had to give payment in advance to a guy to pick me up and take me to the airport at 5 am, and I wasn't completely sure I could trust him, so I didn't sign it. He did pick me up and take me to the airport, but he didn't bring the check back so I could sign it. I asked the TC company and they said anyone could cash the checks as long as I didn't report them stolen. They didn't have to be signed.

Moreover I have heard that if you put your TCs in your checked bag, and they are stolen, some companies will not pay off because you didn't use due care to protect them.

We still use them sometimes, but don't rely on them for day-to-day expenses.

Re: Cashing American Express Travellers' cheques

by KirstenL4W

Travellers checks are passe, especially with the proliferation of ATMs and credit cards, which make it pretty easy to get cash almost anywhere in the world. However, here are a few tips to make using TCs a bit easier:

If you have a AAA card, you can buy them at your AAA office for no fee.

Every major city in the world has an AmEx office, and while you may not get the best rate in the world, last time I was in Europe (1998) they would cash their own checks for no fee. In London the office is on Haymarket, just off Picadilly Circus. In Paris I think the office is near Place de L'Opera. Their website should give you updated information about office locations.

Travel from Los Alcazares to Elche

by louis1806

Does anyone know if there is a train which goes to Elche from or near Los Alcazares or if there is a bus service. I know there is a station at Balsicas but cant see it on map.

Re: Travel from Los Alcazares to Elche

by Aitana

There are several trains between Cartagena and Murcia. You can take the train at Balsicas. Then, take a “cercanias” or a long distance train from Murcia to Alicante, stopping at Elche. There are 2 stations: Elx-Carrus and Elx-Parc, closer to the city centre.
The possible combinations are of regional / long-distance trains are:
Altaria: Balsicas 5.44 – Murcia 6.09; Talgo: Murcia 6.35 – Elx-Parc 7.11
Altaria: Balsicas 9.08 – Murcia 9.34; Mare Nostrum: Murcia 9.45 – Elx-Parc 10.30
There are also two direct trains:
Talgo: Balsicas 13.11 – Elx-Parc 14.28
Regional Express: Balsicas 17.10 - Elx-Parc 18.28
You also can take these trains from Torre Pacheco, except for the first one.
Other trains Balsicas – Murcia: REGIONAL: 07.55, 10.10, 11.15, 14.46, ALTARIA 16.14, ALTARIA 18.37, REGIONAL 19.54 and 21.35. The ride is about 30 minutes. Most of them also stop at Torre Pacheco.
Cercanias Murcia- Alicante: 53 to 60 minutes ride from Murcia to Elx Parc, departing at:
05.55, 06.55, 07.30, 07.55, 08.32, 08.55, 09.27, 10.03, 10.55, 11.55, 12.30, 12.55, 13.30, 14.00, 14.55, 15.55, 16.55, 17.55, 18.50, 19.30, 19.55, 20.35, 21.00, 22.10.
On the web of Renfe is not easy to find itineraries between secondary stations. For regional trains (Cartagena-Murcia), on the left, instead of searching at “Principales estaciones”, go a bit down and you’ll see “Todas las estaciones”: click on “buscar” there.
For Murcia-Alicante, the same way you’ll find the regional or long distance trains, but Cercanias are more frequent.
