On our way to Barcelona, we stayed one night in Peniscola, mostly because that is the movie location for "El Cid", which happens to be Allan's favorite movie of all time.
This fortified old town clusters around the base of Castell del Papa Luna. This castle was built on the foundations of an Arab fortress; then it became the residence of Pedro de Luna, cardinal of Aragon.
Then when the movie "El Cid" was shot, they picked this castle for their location, and today tourist refer to it as El Cid Castle. The uppermost battlements of the castle are false because they were built for a scene from the movie.
Peniscola is a port town, and fresh fish are brought into this port each day. The old town is a labyrinth of narrow, winding streets and white houses surrounded by walls. Peniscola has now expanded beyond the old walls, and the newer portion supports a thriving vacation resort.
