Car hire

by annase

I'll be spending a week in Torrevieja in April and wonder whether anyone can recommend a good car hire company (with a possibility to pick up the car from Alicante airport) where you are not going to be disadvantaged and ripped off because you're a tourist. I have had a look at quite a few websites and where the price was right (for instance Amigo), but it turned out that you have to return the car with an empty tank and then pay for the filling of the tank according to their prices. There was no option for you to fill the tank yourself, which I'd much rather do.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi, we have used Carjet a couple of times and had no problems.

Thank you both. I will try these two.

Last summer we rented a car in Pepecar, not at Alicante but at Santiago de Compostela, and we were very satisfied. I'd recommend it. The office was about 500 m from the airport but they picked us up at the terminal and after returning the car, they gave us a lift to the terminal again.

Otherwise, when you get out from Alicante airport, you will see a series of car rental companies. You cannot miss them, you have to pass between them in your way out (unless you fly with Ryanair or Easyjet, arriving to terminal 2).

Travel Tips for Torrevieja

Wait for the sunset

by Heinisuo

Because of the warm climate (during the summer time), the best time to do something "creative" is early in the morning or late at night.
So take it easy in the middle of the day and hit the road after the sunset.

Playa de los Naufragos

A fine white sandy beach located at the south of Torrevieja is also a nice place to enjoy your holiday. Sun loungers and shades are available to rent, pedalos and jet skis as well. Nice views stretching towards Punta Prima and Cabo Roig.

Playa del Cura

by barbskie

One of the most popular beaches in town. A walking distance to the city center. Has the services and facilities as a blue flag carrier like Red Cross services, games for children, showers , hammocks and most of all, very clean beach.

TORREVIEJA - Town, Harbour and Beaches

by Spanish-eyes

The Harbour is the Centre Point of the Town.

At the Harbour, by the Fishing Wharf, during the day there are boats offering excursions across the bay of Torrevieja, and, from the catamarans you can observe the sea bed and marine life. The various trips to the island of Tabarca, Cabo Roig and along the coast of southern Alicante provide an interesting and unique tourist provision.

Close to the Harbour, is the Waldo Calero, with its ceramic benches and Magnificent Fountain. Here you will find the Souvenir Market, which is open all year round during the afternoon until late, and of course, on the Harbour side of this market is the Fairground.

Nightlife by the Harbour, can be seen in the leisure areas surrounding the souvenir market and the fairground. There are more than a hundred night bars, many of which are situated in the street (“Fun Street”) behind the Paseo Maritimo, which have become a major attraction for thousands of people from all over the world. These include: Casablanca, Bésame Mucho, Pata Palo, Tía Roqueta, Tirachinas, Iris Pub, La Cantina or Correcaminos, are just some examples of typical leisure places in the town.

For the real nightbirds, on the outskirts of the town, this provision is rounded off by the macro-discoteque Pachá, as well as the historic Look and KKO clubs, which cannot be passed over during a nocturnal pub-crawl (la ruta del bakalao).

During the day Torrevieja also offers a range of leisure and entertainment areas. As well as its beaches and numerous terraces along its maritime promenade, its great aquatic park (Aquópolis) is swarming with families, young people and children during the summer months.

Feistas, during the year include the Three Wise Kings on 5th January, in February it is Carnival time, and there is Holy Week at Easter with processions by the various religious fraternities.

In May there is the May Fair held at the beginning of the month when Torrevieja enjoys a week of festivities in the purest Andalusian style, with casetas (marquees) set up in the Harbour precincts, where large gatherings of people in traditional Andalusian costume dance the famous “Sevillanas”. The atmosphere is completed by processions on horseback, carriages, and the tasting of fine Andalusian wines and traditional paellas.

In June, there is the Hogueras de San Juan (St John’s Bonfires) when the town also celebrates the tradition of fire, and in July there is the Fishermen’s fiesta on 16th July with various events, sporting, cultural and religious, in honour of their patron saint, the Virgen del Carmen whose image is carried to the fishing wharf, where it is embarked and carried in seaborne procession all round the bay, escorted by a multitude of boats. In August, there are festivities around the Salt Queen and sometimes there are Grand Salt Queen Parades.
