buying gluten free food

by marmayo

would anyone be able to tell me if gluten-free food (example:bread/ cereal)is readily available to buy in any of the supermarkets in torrevieja? am a coeliac and travelling there in june 2008. any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Sorry to sound ignorant, but is gluten free bread and cereal the same as regular bread and cereal or is it a special make of it?

normal bread and cereal is easily available in many forms, without salt, fibre low fat etc..

If this is not what you meant and no one else can tell you I can ask a friend whose parents have a house there. Let me know.

no blint, gluten is something present in most cereals, but coeliac people do not tolerate it, so they need to buy spacial brands of bread, cookies, pasta, etc

marmayo: I don't know about Torrevieja (never been there), but here you have the pages of the Spanish Association of coeliacs, with info about where to buy these products

http://www.celiacos.org/puntos.html

(it's only in Spanish, but you'll find adresses and phone numbers)

There is at least 1 shop in Torrevieja listed :)) and quite a few in Alicante province
(I had just a quick view)

You may have a look at
http://usuarios.lycos.es/singlutenv/comerfueradecasa.htm
http://www.lantanasin.com/

The supermarkets Alcampo have a section of gluten free products, probably other big supermarkets do have too. Most natural food shops do have these as well

You my contact the Valencian Association of Coeliacs for further info:

Avenida del Cid, 25, entresuelo, oficina 2
46018 Valencia
Tel.:963 857 165
e-mail: info@acecova.org

Have a very nice (and healthy) trip :))

Travel Tips for Torrevieja

Feria de Mayo

by barbskie

A spectacular fiesta of Sevillanas music and dance, held in the fairground area within Torrevieja's harbour. An annual festival which starts (the first day) as fishermen offer the traditional "pescaditos" (fish) to passers by.
The following evening, the Mayor declares the opening of the event followed by a great firework display.
The last day starts with a mass followed by a parade with floats and horses which begins from the church area. Music, dance and horse exhibitions continue throughout the day. Men, women and children are wearing their beautiful costumes untiringly performing their typical dance. This one week fiesta ends at midnight, again with a magnificent fireworks.

go for a walk or jog

by barbskie

A wonderful area for hobby athletes. Jogging, running or walking here in the morning is the best time of the day. A stroll in the evening, offers you the highlighted skyline of the town and the gentle breeze from the mediterranian seas.

A visit in Torrevieja in December.

The area around Alicante and Torrevieja is very well known for their production of salt. As I heard, this region produces 90% of the needs of salt for Europe. Unfourtunatly, I can not verify the figure.

Every year they build a huge Christmas Crib in the center of town. It always has connections to Torrevieja itself, as the old tower (Torre = tower vieja = old) and the producton of salt is mentioned in the crib.

TORREVIEJA- mi ciudad...

by Caroline83

"Torrevieja!"

This page is about Torrevieja, ( una ciudad muy bonita, me parece..) About a year ago my parents bought an apartment , close to the centrum of Torrevieja: cerca de Playa de Los Locos. In the summer 2002, me and my family and my best friend spend 3 lovely weeks here. We had such a great time! The nightlife in Torrevieja is incredible in the summer!! One word: PACHÁ!! :)
