August in Valencia?

by Ronaldinho86

This summer,I'm thinking to go on holiday to Valencia with my friends (22 years old;last year in Barcelona)...how is the city in this period??Is it lively or is it empty and all is closed?
How are the beaches and the sea?
How is the nghtlife?Disco,bars,disco-bar,etc...

Thanks!

the city in summer is empty with locals and full with tourists. restaurants, pubs, many shops etc remain open so you won't have problems with that. beaches are crowded. the city has its own beaches but real nice beaches are outside the city. for instance, you can take a bus near the train station that'd take you to 'el perellonet' or a train to 'gandia' or 'cullera'. those are villages with much nicer beaches. gandia is a bit further away (maybe 1h from valencia), but the train trip to cullera or others could take around 30-40 mins.
as for nightlife, almost everyone goes to pubs and terraces that are open only in the summer near the beach area of the city. Aquarela is the name of one of these terraces that's always crowded with people. There are some other partying areas in the city center (area El carmen, area Canovas, area Blasco Ibañez) but those are a bit empty in summer as people prefer terraces.

Thanks for your infos....I'm 22,so I look for sea and entertainment and many youngs people (but I'm happy too if I can visit a nice city!).

I know that,in August,Spanish people (and Italians too) leave on holiday...but,for example,in August,Barcelona is full of people from all over the world, all is open night and day,it's a fantastic city!I'd want to understand if Valencia is similar (not the same I imagine...Barca is more famous and touristic than Valencia).
I also live in a city on the sea,Bari (certainly less touristic than Valencia),that is empty in August and most is closed...I don't want to find a similar situation!

you wont, dont worry. only smaller, familiar, shops are closed. most restaurants are open as it is tourist season, and so are the shops and big stores. C/Colon is the big shopping street here and i believe none of the shops there are closed in august. as for nightlife, pubs and clubs you'll find even more places open in summer than in the winter, especially by the beach, as i said. i would go partying there, as thats where most of the young ppl go. the city is quiter in august than the rest of the year, meaning less traffic, less noise, less ppl rushing to get to work, etc...but you will not get bored. valencia is smaller than barcelona but we have a lot of tourists that are probably looking for the same things as you :)
hope you enjoy valencia

City Map

Here is a map I picked up at the Valencia tourist infomation point. You may be able to see a circled marking near the centre. THat is the infomation stand I got the map from, and they speak good english here. Funnily enough, they spoke no English at the main Infomation centre. If anyone wants the full size map, just let me know!

One of the important traditional dishes in Spain is of course paella. The Paella Valenciana is in my opinion one of the best. If you want to have an idea what it is all about here are the ingredients :
For 8 persons :
8 chicken thighs
16 prawns
mussels
200 g of chorizo sausage
2 onions
1 bouquet garni
200 g peas
artichoke hearts
400 g of rice
1 small glas of olive oil
squid
1 small glass of wine
paella spices, salt and pepper
If you visit Valencia this is you must eat activity.

Where my Spanish bunglaow will be

by rachel_sun

Here is the site where my property is being built. It is set in a lovely area, unspoilt, quiet and very near the long, unspoilt beach.Valencia is only about 40 minutes away and Alicante about one and a half hours away.Denia has everything and there are also some bars, restuarants along the road from Denia to the site.
There are not going to be any two story properties built,so the view will not be lost and it is a very nice clean area.I cannot wait to do the garden and have some nice hols there.

The Horta

by DanielF

Valencia is situated in a very fertile aluvial plain. Smart irrigation methods since the time of the Moorish domination have allowed the production of aboundant high quality vegetables and fruits. That is the reason why the area that surrounds the city is known as L'Horta (Orchards).

Currently, this traditional way of cultivating the land is threatened by the expansion of the city.

Metro

by tini58de

Valencia has a very modern Metro, which we found especially convenient getting from the airport into town and back to the airport.

In March 2008 a single ticket (Zona AB) from the airport to Valencia Alameda station was 1.80 €. You can buy these tickets at a ticket counter or a ticket machine.

Two things we would like to bring to your attention:

1) after you get on the metro, do not throw away your ticket, because you need it to get out of the station again!

2) tickets from the vending machines are only valid on that particular day - so do not make the same mistake that we made, when we bought tickets ahead of time in order not to take any chances of broken machines or so at 5 a.m. in the morning! This was wasted money .....

For an idea of where the metros will take you, have a look at this pdf plan.
