Torres de Serranos
by Cool-123
The Serranos towers are considered to be the largest Gothic city gateway in all of Europe, and were constructed at the end of the 14th century by Pere Balaguer as part of the city's fortification. They provisionaly housed prison cells and served as a triumphal arch on many festive and solemn occasions.
Santiago Calatrava
by DanielF
Although based in Switzerland, star architect Santiago Calatrava was born in Valencia and his work epitomizes the Valencian personality: it is exuberant, appealing, luminous and excessive. The sthetic prevails over the functionality and the curve forms are an obsession. It is an impactic and futuristic architecture that adapts to almost any kind of environment.
His works, spread all over the Western world, are easily recognisable for the use of white concrete and metal, their Mediterranean luminosity and the audatious arches.
He became famous for the dessign of his characteristic bridges, with the shape of a Spanish "peineta".
The first work of Calatrava in his hometown was this bridge of the Alameda, popularly known as "la peineta" or as Calatrava's bridge. It was however rather controversial and not well accepted by all Valencians.
Being responsible for the bulk of the dessign of the "City of the Science and the Arts", his impact on his hometown will be very important for the generations to come.
The other Falles
by DanielF
Most of the falles are not as spectacular as the ones competing in the special section, but the city is litteraly full of them. Sometimes there is only a few meters distance between the monuments, in particular in "traditinal" districts like Ciutat Vella and Russafa.
Falles artists are often critisized for their conservadurism and lack of innovation. Without falling into the extremes of the avantgarde, the Falla de Santa ?rsula makes the effort of getting out of this conservative trend. It does not compete in the first category, but they always build one of the mos impressive falles.
The old riverbed of river Turia.
by LuigiMS
Some decades ago, the river Turia still passed through the city. But the weather is sometimes cruel in Valencia at Fall, with heavy rains and floods, and the river flooded the city twice this century (the last on the 50s).
So, the Valencian Government decided to detour the Turia riverbed surrounding the South of the city.
And then the old riverbed, which crosses the city from NW to SE in a large curve, was turned into a long, winding and huge park very beautiful and quiet, with many interesting spots all along it.
It's perfect for long walks, rides with bycicle, skating and rollerskating. It's several kilometers long.
Vivir sin Dormir
by SirRichard about To live without sleeping
This place with such a weird name is located by the Malvarrosa beach, a bit outside Valencia.
They have also a terrace, a very nice place to sit on a hot day and see the people passing by...
Open in the afternoons too.
