Madrid, of course, is the not-so-new capital of this new Spain. It’s been the Spanish capital since 1561, when Philip II moved his court here from Toledo. It’s not an elegant city. Spain always has Barcelona to go head to head against Paris or London or Rome for sophisticated shopping and well-dressed women. Madrid is resolutely unstylish, keeps its own hours, and pursues its own pleasures. Madrid is a city of thousands of bars but few drunks, a city of endless narrow streets and only a few broad boulevards, and, of course, a city filled with art. In many ways Madrid is the cultural center of the entire Spanish-speaking world. The Prado (see picture) by itself draws tourists and art pilgrims much the way Florence does.

Just walking around towns, from time to time you come across unannounced pleasures. This was a pleasant experience in Madrid called Plaza de la Villa which featured a statue of Don Alvara de Bazan. No, I have no idea either in answer to your next question.

"Clandestine" drinks
by agarcia about Café del Mono
I know, I know, the entrance of the bar is not exactly appealing. The external aspect of this small and cozy bar is so... unusual, that it's a very common thing to miss it while looking for a late drink in the Latina neighborhood. But once you pass the doorman that looked twice to the street before allowing you in, you'll find the real place. Excellent music and great ambience!
Ups, I almost forget to mention that they serve the BEST gin & tonics of the city ;-)
