Does anyone know any shop or store which sells large poster like images of family Spanish Coat of Arms? Any shop name and address would be helpful!

Not sure if this will help, but try http://www.patrimonionacional.es/en/infprac/visitas/palacio.htm which is the royal palace. They have a gift shop there and we saw all sorts of stuff for sale - had to tie my wife up or else she would have bought everything - LOL

Travel Tips for Madrid

What a back yard!!

by jamiesno

I guess for me living in Labrador with a personal lot of 100 x 200 feet and the rest of Labrador being wide open, I found this garden interesting.

I can't imagine I guess having so little space to call your own but I guess that's life in the heart of Madrid.

Nice job though with so little space :-)

Tapas

by marielexoteria

Tapas is one of the dishes that people think of when they think of Spanish cuisine. Tapas are appetizers that are essentially served together with a drink.

Its name comes from the Spanish verb tapar which means to cover and there are some stories about how this dish became what it is today. One says that the King Alfonso X needed to take some wine sips as a prescription to a disease he had and that he had to eat small dishes together with the wine between hours, to "cover" the effects of alcohol. When he got better he ordered that wine was not to be served without a small ration of food. Another story says that tapas were "created" to prevent flies or other insects to get into the wine glasses between sips.

Nowadays tapas are enjoyed and the variations of tapas dishes are endless, being some of the most popular or traditional: olives, calamares (squid rings), gambas either al ajillo or with salsa negra (prawns with garlic or peppercorn sauce), meat balls, serrano ham, manchego cheese, chorizo, croquetas (made of fish or chicken), patatas bravas (potato dices served with spicy tomato sauce) and tortilla española (Spanish omelette).

A little plate of tapas is called porción. If you want to have a bigger plate or if you want to have a tapas dinner then ask for a ración (big tapas plate) or a media ración (half a big tapas plate) if you're not that hungry but want more than a porción.

Now who said art had to be expensive?!

by Urzu

If you are interested in art, or better said contemporary art, make sure you pass by the open air sculpture museum in the Castellana street. This "museum" is right on the street (by the Ruben Darío Metro station), and there you can find different contemporary sculptures, among others one by Chillida. Check it out if you have some time, after all it's for free!

El Rastro a large flea market.

by Beach_dog about El Rastro

A huge flea market selling anything and everything. I was amazed at the extent of it filling the streets for a few blocks in every direction. Certainly worth a visit if you are in Madrid on a Sunday morning. Just beware of pickpockets in the crowds.

The best PINK FLOYD tribute band

by Lorro about The Pink Tones

If you like Pink Floyd and never got the chance to hear their music live, OR even if you did, check out one ot these guys concerts. Their sound is fantastic and they offer the chance to experience the music in a way you can't at home with your CD player. My boyfriend is the lead guitarist so you could say I'm baised but the unanimous opinion is that they are great and more than do justice to the original. Great keyboards, amazing saxophone and guitars,
The set lists mainly include songs from, but not limited to, "The Wall, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here" and others...
So come and rock out with a crowd of Spaniards who know the words better than me!

Upcoming Concerts:

9 Feb 08 - Sala Capitol (Santiago de Compostela)
19 Apr 08 - Extremusika (Caceres)
