taxi -- tipping?

by Susumarie

Seems like I read somewhere you don't tip taxi drivers in Spain -- is that accurate? And do you need the exact change? I am not very experienced in taxis, and am going to need them a bit. My Spanish is muy poco, so will that be an obstacle?
I will be there in a few days -- very excited!

It's not compulsary at all to tip, and it's beter to have snall notes, and not needed the exact change either.

Re: taxi -- tipping?

Sometimes the the exact change is better at night and some taxis accept credits cards, just ask them.

Taxis in Madrid should also display the up to date tariffs and you can see what they are by looking at the city's web site:

www.munimadrid.es

and hit the Movilidad y Transportes link on the left list, then 'we highlighht' Taxis on the next page.

Basically taxis are metered in Madrid and make sure the meter is on when starting your journey.
There are fixed tariffs for 'extras' as well as detailed on that page. For example at the start of a journey there are fixed basic charges of:
€2.05 between hours of 06.00 & 22.00
€2.20 between hours of 22.00 & 06.00 following day.
but €3.20 on a Saturday night !
If the taxi driver has provided an efficient service at the correct price then up to you to leave a tip. Round it off ?

Watch the taxi drivers from Barajas airport as they have been known to 'rip off' the unsuspecting tourist. However waiting in a long queue for a passeneger at the airport is not much fun. There is also a standing charge of €5.50 currently if picked up at the airport or taken to the airport.

Y'all have been very helpful -- another question here, the comment about a standing charge from the airport, is that in addition to the fare?

Re: taxi -- tipping?

by puerto_lover

Yes. Those charges as listed on the local Madrid 'city hall' web site are extra to the meter. Supplementary.

Re: taxi -- tipping?

by Redang

Yes, they charge some fees to what the taxi-meter says (listed and legal anyway)

Re: taxi -- tipping?

by Susumarie

Puerto lover -- you say the taxi drivers from the airport are known to rip off tourist -- just how do they manage that?

Re: taxi -- tipping?

by Redang

Not all of them, not at all!

most people just round to the next figure when tipping taxis, i.e. 6.40 €, give them 7. Maybe 1 euro extra if it's a long drive and they were nice and helpful.

But tiping in Spain is always something you do when you want to reward good service and it's never compulsory.

Most taxi drivers are honest, but as everywhere there is people who try to take advantage of tourists. Just be careful and ask for an official receipt of you do not agree with them.

Travel Tips for Madrid

Prado 2.

by ger4444

Let me be your guide at the Prado. if you only visit the Prado one time you should go for the Spanish painters. The Golden Erea is best represented by the works of Velazquez. He was an important painter at court, as he produced from his 28 th till his dead. he painted realsm work as well as portraits, paintings with religious and mytholigical subjects. His most striking peace of art is perhaps "Las Meninas" In the 18 th century it was Goya who gave spanish painting new life. in the french earea he painted the misery of war, his Third May being the best and most moving example. later on he got fame for his paintings known as "negros." The 3 th mai. Goya's best painting an a precursor of realism art in the 18 th century.

Make reservations!!!

by IIGUANA

It's impressive, but I've never seen so many people in restaurants as in Madrid. Most restaurant have reservations, but some don't (I try 3 times over a restaurant and couldn't get a table!!!). As people here eat late (between 8pm and midnight), most restaurants have 2 shifts: one around 8pm and the other at 11pm. If you don't have a reservation, try going at 7:30pm or by 10pm, although you, like me, won't even have the chance to eat. So do make the reservation. For your own sake. For your hunger...

Bullfight!

by acemj

The Plaza de Toros (also known as Las Ventas), is Madrid's bullring. All of the great bullfighters have competed here, but I have never seen a bullfight so I don't feel qualified to discuss it. I wasn't sure if I should put this under "sports" or if it is more of a cultural event. Obviously, this is a controversial subject, but at some point in my life, I would love to witness the spectacle of a bullfight and maybe then I'll decide it it's for me.
The season runs from March through October.

the town of Salamanca

by ger4444

The town is situated at the Tormes. The centre is Plaza Mayor, it’s a baroque square where the townhall is situated. Along the building you see houses with arches. The new cathedral is build in the 16 th century. Its gothic with baroque ornaments. It has a small patio and trough the entrance of the chapel you can enter the old cathedral with is a cellar. This old cathedral has a magnificent altar, in gothic-roman style. There are more than 50 paintings above the altar. The university is dating from the 16 th. Century and is situated in front of the both cathedrals. The courtyard is 15 th. Century. In the building you find a senats hall. In Northern of the cathedral there is the monastery de Santa Maria de las Duenas. It has a patio with arches that have capitles in the form of fairy tale animals. The famous Casa de las Conchas is the house with shells. The font is decorated with shells, wapons and decorated windows. Finally, take a look at the Museo Art Nouveau, its building as well as its collection is interesting. Salamanca can be done all by food in one day. the prettiest view on the town you have at the bridge.
