Comfortable Modern hotel 2 mins from Metro

I was very impressed by my room (704) in this 4* hotel.

I usually stay in more basic accommodation, but I wanted to stay near the Palace des Deportes
(This was where Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band were performing).

This was my first visit to Madrid, so wasn't sure of the city lay out, or how easy it would be to get around, especially late at night after the concert.

Booking. com had a Double room for a single person, 2 nights for 130 Euros

(Breakfast (buffet) would have been 12 euros extra)

Pleasant Reception area, efficient check in.

2 lifts.

My room was quite spacious, modern with light furnishings and fittings.

Double bed (with assortment of pillows, and description leaflet explaining the different fillings!), wardrobe, safe, mini bar with complimentary waters, large flat screen TV.

Spacious bathroom with large shower cubicle, basin, WC. Large fluffy towels, make up mirror, hairdryer.

Freebies- bath/ shower gels, shampoo, comb, shower cap, toothbrush/paste, glycerine soap, sewing kit, chocolates.

A card gave the name of the cleaner - The room was spotless!

There is a restaurant and cafeteria, which I didn't get chance to eat in.

Rooftop gym, sauna, hair/beauty salon (Which I was hoping to use, but didn't get the time)

Unique Quality: 2 mins walk from Metro station (Sainz de Baranda - Line 9 - Purple) which connects to Circular line (6 - Grey)

Glass work features in lounge areas by the artist Manuel Ortega

Modern and airy reception/ lounge areas

Pleasant garden with decking, gravel paths, seating. Trees and shrubs

Although this hotel is away from the main attractions, it is quite near to the Retira Gardens and Prado museum.

I found it easy to use the Metro to get around (I purchased a 2 day tourist ticket for 6.80 euros which I found good value)

Near the hotel are restaurants and bars.

I'd Certainly use this hotel again!

Being slightly out of the centre probably gets You a better hotel for less money.

I'd use this hotel again

Palacio de Deportes

by suvanki

One of Madrids main concert and indoor sports venues. It can seat up-to 16,000+

This is where I came to see Bruce Springsteen and The E- Street Band play on 25th November 2007!

Originally this was the site of a market garden, then later a bullring, who's foundation stone was laid 29.10.1872, opening 2 years later in September 1874.

Its architectural style was the pattern for other bull rings in Spain. This bullring was demolished in October 1934, a day after the last bull fight. The site was empty for many years.

In 1969 a sports stadium was completed with basketball, cycling, athletics and hockey facilities.

In 1985, the Madrid Regional Government took over this stadium, with further renovation and improvements to the structure and acoustics. However, a fire in 2001 destroyed the stadium.

28th June 2005 saw the opening of the latest Palacio Deportes, as a venue for Sports, music, leisure and recreation, becoming one of the leading venues in Europe.

I thought it was a great concert venue!

I finally got a ticket and entered the stadium. All the staff were friendly and helpful. I managed to get drinks - small beer and bottle of water and a bocadillo - ( ham and cheese), which was tasty and fresh, before the show started.

I also bought a T-shirt, but the service wasn't that great -I thought I'd become invisible!! This probably wasn't a fault of the venue though.

I booked my hotel Ayre Gran Hotel Colon, as it was near to the venue - see my hotel tips for more info.

Dear All,

I will be in Madrid for 2 nights with my fam (7 adults) :
How to reach Ayre Gran Hotel Colón, Pez Volador 1-11, from the airport. Should we use 2 taxis for that ? how much is the cost idea ?

Thanks for your help.
Iwan

You can always take the tube, should be around 45min 1€ pax. If you get a taxi it will be 30 min if there´s not too much traffic, and around 30 euros each taxi.

Yes, if you take the metro www.metromadrid.es from Terminal 2 (T2), take line 8 to Nuevos Ministerios, then line 6 to, I think, Sainz de Baranda (the only doubt is Sainz de Baranada or O'donnell, ask your hotel for info). Due to you are 7 people, buy a 10 trip ticket. Sinbgle is 1 €, 10 trip ticket, 6,40 €, plus, you will use the metro many more times, so, it is worth it.
