accommodations for 3
by jn1963
Hi everyone,
3 of us will be traveling in February (2 adults and 1 16-year old). We'd prefer to get 1 room with an extra bed (or a triple), but it seems that the price for a double goes up considerably just to have 1 extra person in the room. Is there any way around this? We are looking at apartments, too, but a hotel with breakfast would be ideal. We'd be happy to bring our own sleeping mat and sleeping bag for our son, but would this be acceptable?
Many thanks!

We stayed at El Busco de Tiempo just SE of Sol (on my Madrid page and also sir richard). The rooms were big and the management were very proactive in helping when they were there. The rooms are also inexpensive enough that you can pay for a second room and it is no big deal.

My husband and I and twin 15 year old daughters were in Madrid in October and I found an apartment on LOQUO that was much more economical than most commercial sites. It WAS up 5 flights of stairs but it's owned by an American who has been living in Madrid for years. He's very nice and helpful and the apartment is clean, quiet and comfortable and only Euro 50 a night (for the whole apartment - not per person). The beds are comfortable and parents can sleep a bit apart. The kid[s] sleep in teh living room with the TV!!!!
There are grocery stores close by which enabled us to save enormously on the cost of eating out. The apartment is 5 minutes walk from Reina Sofia Museum and Atocha train station and a few minutes more from The Prado. The Lavapies metro is close by. The other advantages were no contract or deposit or cleaning fees.
If you are interested see: http://rentals.loquo.com/english/post/4953
There are photos on the website. We had a great time and can highly recommend Tom's place to those wanting and apartment.

Travel Tips for Madrid
You'll arrive at Gran Via as...
by Pegasus74
You'll arrive at Gran Via as you head north along Calle Montera from here. This boulevard is a popular shopping area containing many humble hostels and grand hotels. Continue east towards Calle de Alcala you'll reach Plaza de la Cibeles, Madrid's favorite roundabout surrounding the gorgeous La Cibeles fountain. The elegant Palacio de Linares stands by the arc of the circular road. No wonder there are so many snapshots taken here. Going the other way along Gran Via, you will reach Plaza de Espana and directly south is the Palacio Real. This royal palace was built on the sight of Madrid's first Arab fortress and is one of the best sights in Madrid. It simply captures the essence of the word 'Majesty'. The statues, fountains and hedge mazes within this compound collectively make this a perfect place for evening stroll.
Fascist demonstration
by orlikins
We came across this demonstration with ppl waving pictures of General Franco & Spanish flags, which we didnt expect at all, in fact we thought there was going to be trouble, maybe a riot! But it was actually the anniversary of Franco's death. I had never seen anything like it and it was a very interesting insight into Franco's lasting influence on Spanish culture & history.
Real Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial
by Witinha
The Escorial is amazing. This monastery has an Architecture Museum, a Painting Museum, the Kings' Pantheon, a basilica, a library, etc, etc.
The monastery's construction started in 1562, by decision of King Felipe II, who died in the Escorial at 1598.
FREE newspapers
by SirRichard
There are now 2 free newspapers in Madrid: Metro and 20 minutos. You can get them early in the morning in the main metro entrances and in some bars (like the "Rodilla" chain of sandwiches shops).
They are medium (15-20 pages) newspapers with international, national, locals, TV programs, Cinema sessions, theatres... They have internet editions too:

Nice lounge
by vanessadb about Ars
Located in the gay and trendy district of Chueca, Ars is a pretty new and trendy lounge, beautifully decorated. Colourful and dimmed lighting, mattresses and comfy sofas, and laid-back atmosphere.
One little piece of advice though: do not sit near the ice machine at the bar as it makes a very disturbing and loud noise every time the waitress makes a mojito. And people seem to be drinking a lot of them these days ;-) None
