Time to be at train station?

by Susumarie

After seeing other posts here, wondering what is the necessary lead time to arrive at the train station? We will be leaving on the 9 pm AVE out of Atocha, and do want to make the most of that last day -- what is a safe time to be there no later than?

First of all you want to make sure you are at the Atocha Renfe metro and not the Atocha metro station. Theoretically you can get on the train at 8:59, throw your luggage on the luggage rack (assuming there is any room left). The Atocha station is well laid out with the tracks on the South side. The displays show which train for which final destination and for which platform. At most it would take less than 10 minutes to find a platform once inside the station. As a practical matter I try to get to the station 30 minutes. I also try to get there early enough to get my luggage where I want it on the luggage rack.. The plus side with the Atocha station is the beautiful botanical display in the station. It is worth being early just for that. Karl

Are the Metro and RENFE stations close to each other, so I might pick the wrong one? I am seeing maps that show the Atocha train station just kinda south of the Parque del Retiro -- is that the right direction to head? I send thanks for that heads up, as I'm sure I would have picked the wrong one...

Correct, there are two Atocha stations and of course most people head south on the metro and hit the first one which is not the Atocha Renfe station. Both stations are marked on the lines in the trains, but oftentimes not on the metro maps. Karl

I would also consider how familiar you are with the station and how soon you will be able to find your track. I like to arrive a little extra early for that reason: Be able to double check departure time and location, get that extra bottle of water or sandiwch and not have to rush in.

Travel Tips for Madrid

Not a must see but it´s nice

by Gaby_G

Zoo Aquarium Madrid is a great place to visit, the animals are well treated and it´s a clean place... What else can I say? Who hasn´t visited a zoo? Lot´s of different species of animals... It also have different shows (birds, dolphins, etc.) and you can take really nice pictures :)
It is located in Casa de Campo...

Tapas

by vanessadb

Tapas are basically small portions of different typical foods you share. They are thus a great way of tasting the huge variety of Spanish dishes.

Tapas include "raciones", "canapes", and "croquetas" and my suggestion is try them all!

By the way, don´t worry if you don't understand the menu, most tapas bars have their tapas on display at the bar so you can simply point at what looks appealing to you.

It's movie time! Filmoteca de Madrid

by Urzu

The filmoteca "Cine Dore" in Madrid offers you the oportunity to watch the classics of movies for a very reasonable price. The building was founded in the early 20th century and has been working ever since. The filmoteca organises cycles of different themes or directors such as for example "Remembering Ingmar Bergman", which should be a must-see for any cinema lover!
You will find it on the street Santa Isabel n.º 3 . Closest metro stations are: Antón Martín, Tirso de Molina and Lavapiés.

Empty Madrid

by SirRichard

I love to get up early on sundays to see Madrid EMPTY. It's when Madrid is at its best, no cars, no pollution, no noises... it only lasts till approx 10 o'clock, so U better hurry if you wanna see it.
Another chance is in august, when the city is empty of madrilians...

O' Neills

by virtualpatrick about O' Neills

O' Neills in Madrid is the other Irish pub that's always great to hangout in. It's in the Puerta del Sol / Santa Ana area so it's in a central place.

And it's on the same street as a hostal I have stayed in several times that I've been to Madrid. How convenient.

As you go into the bar, there's a snug area to the right near the window where there are table/chairs and benches. If you're with a group or waiting for people, try to get this area and claim it for the whole night/morning. Our group closed it down till 4:30 or 5:00am.
