Metro practicalities, especially from airport

by jayhawk2000

When leaving T2 at Barajas Airport, is it the €2 'Sencillo Madrid + Aeropuerto Supplemento' we'll need in order to travel to Sol station?

After buying the ticket, does it need validated? Or is it like the London tube, where the ticket opens the barrier as you go in and is then 'eaten' by the turnstile as you leave the system?

Or should we buy the 10 Metrobus ticket and pay the airport supplement separately? Something on the Metro Madrid site says these needed validated, but that this is done by putting it in the turnstile. Again, are they saying it's like in London, where the turnstile pulls it through?

I'm always befuddled by other city's metro systems on the first visit!

Hi! How long are you going to be in Madrid?
If you are going to be there for 2 days or more, it might be worthwhile purchasing an unlimited travel ticket. I paid 6.80 euros last year for 2 days worth. Please check out my travel tips for more info.(including Metro from the airport to Sol and validation - I seem to remember that it's like London - put your ticket into turnstyle, it then flips out as gate opens to let you through.I usually stand back and see what everyone else does first though.)

The staff at the travel office at the airport were very helpful in advising the best tickets etc. The first time I travelled to Madrid, I bought a single ticket first and paid airport 1 euro supplement. The 2nd time, my 2 day pass included the supplement.

Are you staying near Sol? If you are, I recommend that you search out Calle Victoria, which is off Sol (Tio Pepe end)to the right, for some good bars and cafes. If you like prawns (or other seafood), you have to go to Casa del Abuelo! For a traditional family run bar that serves only about 6 dishes Again check out my restaurant tips. Also try La Mallorquina near the Sol sign (opposite end to Tio Pepe sign)for pastries and cakes etc - A popular place for locals to enjoy a coffee and sweet or savoury treat.

Travel Tips for Madrid

Points of orientation - Las Ventas

by El_Sueco

As you can see from this picture, the bull-fighting stadium Las Ventas (to the right in the foto) is close to this great bow construction.
When you will come driving on the M30, you will pass under this traffic congestion where I am taking the picture, and you will know you are at the Ventas (which also is the name of a metro-station close at hand)

The right time for have a dinner!

by schlumpf

Well, i am italian and we usually have a dinner quiet early, arnd 08pm/09pm, so, what was a bit shockie for me was to have a dinner at 11pm, quiet early for the madrilenian...deamn!
I was sufferign!! hehehehehe...
This could be consider something like a custom...
But, surely, this is another way to spend the day, and another way to re-organzie the whole day...if you take a dinner at 11pm, you might find the time for have a a couple of hours of SIESTA...ehhehehehhe...

Royal Botanic Garden

by rexvaughan

This lovely sculpted garden is a great place to recover from being saturated with Goya, Velazquea, El Greco, etc. It was built in the reign of Charles III in the 18th C. He was called the "best mayor of Madrid" for all the improvements he made to the city. The garden is 20 acres laid out in squares, but the sharp angles are softened by all the lovely trees, flowers and foliage. There is also an excellent Exhibition Greenhouse which has more than 1000 species of plants. They have an extensive program of education and research. It was decalared an Artistic Garden in 1942.

Open daily except Christmas & New Year's Day 10:00 to sunset. Admission 2 Euros, 1 with student card; Seniors & students free.
