8 hour layover

by flofreely

i have an 8 hour layover this week in madrid. i will be traveling with my 12 year old and after an evening flight from the states, we arrive at 7:30 am. want to see and explore what little of the city we can (preferably outdoors)in such short time. we will be exhausted so i am thinking a taxi will be more convenient. i was thinking of just strolling through puerta del sol and plaza mayor. never been to madrid, just what im coming up from research... our connection leaves at 4:00 pm.. any advice? thanks in advance for any suggestions/advice =)

if you get the airport Metro service to Nuevos Ministerios (the only line from the airport) and then emerge from the station you could find the Madrid Vision bus if its a nice day and take a Hop On Hop Off tour. The bus stops near Nuevos Ministerios. (see map on the site -stop 6 on the Modern Madrid tour) :

http://www.madridvision.es/en/rutas.php

You could then use this bus to get off anywhere you like for example Paseo del Prado or even the Bernebeu football stadium if you are interested in football.
Eventually taking the same bus back to Nuevos Ministerios after your walking tour in central Madrid having got off the bus at Alcala stop 14. And return using the Metro.

I have to admit the the day the group visited the Museo del Prado I didn't go with them because I was very tired.
Consequently, I can't give any information about the museum.
However, I am giving the working hours:

Sun: 09-14h
Metro:Banco de España

Watching Atletico de Madrid

by AlexInacio

For a great night of footy try Atletico Madrid. I wouldn't say it's more authentic than Real Madrid but there are certainly fewer tourists!
I paid €25 to sit by the corner spot (lateral) and even though the opposition on the day - Racing Santander - aren't one of Atletico's great rivals, the atmosphere was still passionate and noisy.
Try visiting the club museum before the match to see the collection of trophies won over the years and a variety of shirts, photos and other memorabilia. The displays are only in Spanish but there are guided tours available.
It's closed on Mondays but open right up until kick-off on match days. The entrance is via the bar/restaurant by gate 23.
The club shop is also fun to buy a souvenir and is a hive of activity on match days. The entrance is situated between gates 25 and 26.

Arquitectura en Metro/Architecture by Metro: L4

by Redang

There are dozens of emblematic buildings and monuments in Madrid, famous and less famous. I bring here the possibilty of seeing some of them linked to each other by metro.

* Metro: Colón
Name: Edificio Biblioteca Nacional de España (National Library of Spain) (main pic)
Address: Paseo de Recoletos, 20
Architect: Francisco Jareño
Year: 1.865-1.868

Name: Museo Arqueológico (3rd pic)
Address: Calle Serrano, 13
Architect: Antonio Ruiz de Salces
Year: 1.885-1.892

* Metro: Alonso Martínez (also lines 5 and 10)
Name: Palacio de Longoria (2nd pic)
Address: Calle Fernando VI, 4
Architect: José Grases Riera
Year: 1.902-1.904

Important notices:
1. Some buildings or monuments are very close to the metro station and easy to be found whilst some others are a bit far and it's not so easy to get to them, you only have to look for the correct street or square.

2. The link shows the list of the stations of the different metro lines.

3. As I said before, there are many buildings/monuments, but I only bring here a few of them.

El Parnasillo

by evona about Tapas

When you are in Spain you need to go to one of many locals. This one is very nice. This is a Guinness pub, but you can drink here too spanish beer. I like Mahu - this is very light beer. And you can eat there tapas or tortilla or another great specialite de la meson.
I like the mosaic walls in spanish locals. They are really beautiful. I think this is not importand.
