Using credit cards in Madrid - troubles??
by Deedee99
I've been warned that it is not advised to use credit cards as a paying method - is this true?? Have you been charged more than one for the same bill?? Any advice on this?? Is it true?
I am used to pay with plastic so this is small shock for me...
Thanks for answers,
Sabina

Where you get that piece of (wrong) advice?
Paying with plastic is a very common practice in Madrid (and anywhere else in Spain). I can't really remember the last time I paid by cash any purchase of more than 10€!
I guess you may be unlucky and find a dishonest person who tries to charge you more. But I guess this may happen in your hometown as well.

The advice is WRONG! Credit cards are safe. If you are double charged, tell your credit card company and they will take care of it and you will not have to pay.

Thanks for answers - I assumed that this is just another "wrong" advice. I use my plastic all the time, here and everywhere in Europe so I was just shocked and wanted to make shure.
Thanks again, Sabina

Not to worry about using credit cards in Madrid. I am using them all the time and I have never had any problems.

another option is just to take your card to make withdraws and use euros. that's what i did and it was fine.... but you may want to withdraw about 300E at a time so your bank doesn't charge you over and over again.

Dear all,
I've just returned from Madrid with no bad expirience at all. It was very simple and safe to pay with cards. Thank you for your replies,
hola, Sabina

As I recall the only bad experience I have had with plastic after a trip is having to deal with the bill!

Travel Tips for Madrid
The Puerta de Sol
by Paul2001
The Puerta de Sol is essentially the heart of Madrid. It seems that this is the focal point of all the city's political and social activity. There were political demonstrations going on when I was walking through but I could never get a straight answer on what about. Socially there are lots of shops nearby, especially to the north. There are also many bars in the vicinity. Sadly there are lots of prostitutes just a block south. Perhaps the oddest thing about the Puerta de Sol is how unremarkable it is. There are really no important monuments here and the draw seems to be location and the fact that it is a traffic hub. Even I was drawn as I my hotel was but one block south of the square.

Madrid de los Austrias
This is the Madrid built during the dinasty of the Habsburg, from Felipe I to Carlos II, who died in 1700.
In 1561 Felipe II named Madrid as the capital of the Empire.
Is one of the historic areas and one of the oldest parts of Madrid.
<Puerta del Sol
In the times of the Habsburg it was the entrance to the capital.
Now it's a vibrant part of the city, also called the Kilometre 0, because every road in Spain has (or had)it's start right there, you an also see the 'Oso y el Madroño' the symbol of the town.

by shellseeker
The more expensive tickets are in the shadow (sombra), the cheaper ones in the sun (sol). Tickets are sold directly in Las Ventas (Tue-Fri 9.30-14.30) or in the centre close to Puerta del Sol (Calle de la Victoria).

by tzuki about Black Star
Black Star is one of the place in the city where you can find very good music to dance, playing top pop releases, spanish music and funky. Is not a big place so it gets crowdy easily, however, depending on the day, you get more space or you don´t. Casual
