We have a trip to Spain coming up very soon and the last couple of days are still in the air a bit. We need to drop someone off at Barajas for a flight one morning, then fly out ourselves the next morning. Plan is to arrive via AVE at Atocha station in evening prior to first flight, so looking for a two night stay. Planning to rent a car at the airport when we drop off the first party, use it for a day trip (Toledo, Segovia?), then drop off at the airport when we leave the next day.
The difficult parts are getting from Atocha to the hotel and then to the airport the next morning before getting the car. Any suggestions or advice is appreciated.

By the way did you know that there is a fairly new bus service that links Atocha station with the airport - works all day/night. If you open http://www.emtmadrid.es
then look for bus number 203 you can also get some neat map of the route.
So if you stay somewhere within walk of Atocha - and there are hundreds of options here - then perhaps you can use this bus for getting to then airport. It's called AIRPORT EXPRESS and this was an article about it (in Spanish) :

Taking a bus or train to Toledo is very easy. From the same ATOCHA you can take a fast train also.
If you are planning to visit in winter then daylight hours are shorter and frankly you would be best advised to spend those hours getting to know Toledo and Madrid ? Segovia is north west and other way totally so leave the car idea UNLESS you go when daylight hours are long and you really want to maximise your visit.
Good advice. We were considering the car, as we though it would give more flexibility, but your points are well taken. We will already be driving for a couple of days in Andalucia and that may be enough driving for us!
Yes, I know about the new line to the airport that apparently opened in October. We are, indeed considering whether something along the line, or simply near the airport would be ok with the use of this line.
The number of hotels available is just the problem! With so many options and knowing little about Madrid, it is tough figuring out the best options.
As an avid fan of renting cars I would advise you not to bother if you want to stay anywhere in the main City if you value your stress levels (assuming you dont know the place). I believe hotels.com can show you hotels nearby a particular place (Atocha) in order of distance. Cross-reference that with Tripadvisor.
If you stay near Atocha your day trip is easy, and transport to airport as posted above.
While walking around the centre of Madrid, look around! You will find yourself surrounded by this beautiful architecture, and not only in the bigger streets. I like to think that Madrid has a certain class and elegance due partly to its architecture. Also, where ever you are, don't forget to look up! You might find a nice surprise on top of a building!!
Madrid, I liked your Calle Mayor, it's one of the most elegant and gorgeus streets which I managed to see.... beautiful palaces, trendy shops and restaurants... it's like a bridge connecting two poles - hustling and bustling Puerto del Sol and majestic Royal Palace.
Madrilenes dont celebrate christmass with presents. The presents are done with Twelpht night (los reyes magos) There is a procession from the Retiro park to the Plaza Mayor with horse carrages. on the twelpht night everyone gives eachotere presents then.
not really off the beaten path, because not in Madrid, there is the Escurial Palace to visit.

This was the palace of Philippe II, the son of Carlos V, the emperor.
The Salamanca quarter is ,for almost no doubt, the most exclusive part of Madrid to shop at.
If you are coming to Madrid only with the intention to shop, then I believe , after doing it, your store list will be longer and better then that one.
