Bus to the airport from the center of the city

by leoinv1

I looked at the Madrid Bajaras airport web site and some other sites and did not find any clear information on whether there is an airport express bus that connects the center of the city (Gran Via, Plaza Mayor, etc) with the airport.

In Barcelona, there's a bus that runs every few minutes from the center (Placa de Catalunya) and the airport.

Does it make sense to take the city bus from Gran Via where I am going to be staying and the airport? Is there a good and cheaper alternative to taxi for travellers with luggage?

Taking a city bus and then takijng a metro with bags is out of the question for us.

I used to take an airport bus to Plaza Colon, but apparently that service has been discontinued. It seems that now there is only service #200 to Avenida de America. There is a timetable in PDF format here:

Unfortunately Avenida de America is not particularly central, certainly not walking distance from Gran Via. I don't know if there is any advantage in taking that bus compared to taking the metro to Nuevos Ministerios - either way you have to find a way of getting to Gran Via.

However it's a little while since I've been in Madrid, there may be another option I don't know about,

As previously noted, the metro is best.

Be sure and have a money belt or similar with all your valuables under your clothes. The point where you transfer from the Airport line to another line, as well as the Airport line is a *favorite* with pick pockets. Realize anything on your backpack and pockets are easy pickings.

Look for the little Metro sign when you clean customs. Depending on what terminal you're coming from it could be a bit of a walk. When you get there, before going to the metro level there's a big metro office and they'll give you a map and trace your route for you.

I usually buy 10 rides from the machine, and you pay a little extra to get out of the airport.

Travel Tips for Madrid

Visit El Escorial

by agarcia

Placed in the northern mountains of Madrid province, San Lorenzo del Escorial it's a highly recommendable day visit if you want to escape for a while from Madrid intense activity (not to mention the traffic). There you could enjoy a visit to the famous Monastery, as well as wonderful natural views of the beautiful valley in which the town of San Lorenzo is placed. By the way, it's full of tourist during the weekends, so that's probably the days in which you wouldn't want to visit the place. ;-) Please, visit my Escorial VT page for more info.

Churros Is a spanish fried piece of paste made of water, flour and salt. It is also called porras, bunuelos and chichis, depending on it's shape. And usually sparkle with sugar.

It is tradionally for Spaniards to go and churros with hot chocolate after partying all night, specially in New Years.

San Gines is famous for the best churros in Madrid. It's located in Calle de Coloreros between Arenales and Calle Mayor. Just around the corner from Joy.

Real Madrid's potato chips!

by alfredop

If you're one of those weird Real Madrid fans and collect everything related to them... don't forget to buy a bag of potato chips with their brand on the bag!

These can only be found at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

El Rastro

by jamiesno about El Rastro

On Sunday's in Madrid you can visit the El Rastro or Flea Market. It will be very busy with lots of people. There are streets and streets of crafts, paintings, food, and the list goes on and on. If you like flea markets this one is for you, it was the biggest I've ever seen. There are some dangers be cautious of, as there are pick pockets everywhere and you have to like crowds of people!

Cosy, Laidback Bar/Cafe

by mollymoo0oo0 about El Tío Vinagre

El Tío Vinagre is tucked down a small side street in the multicultural Lavapies zone of the city. It is small but comfortable, and offers a range of infusions, copas, and tapas.

Staff are pleasant, and there is a small seating space at the back. Flyers with the latest info on music events, both locally and throughout Spain are also dotted around. Also often displaying photo exhibitions and selling a small selection of handmade jewellery :)

Reasonable prices - Mojitos from 4.50-8.00€, Tapas, mainly tostas (open-topped toasts) start from 3.50€ ...and are very tasty indeed (especially those with queso azul, blue cheese!!) Be Yourself!!
