My wife and I stayed at the Hostal Luz twice, July 2008 and August 2008. The location cannot be beat in Madrid - 5 minute walk from Sol Metro and 2 minutes from Opera Metro on a quiet side street just off of Arenal, the pedestrian street that runs between Sol and Opera. Hostal Luz is indeed a three floor walkup but there is an elevator being installed at this very moment (8/14/08) and it should be completed by the end of September. Hostal Luz has an older section and a brand new section. We stayed in the newer and would recommend spending the extra few euros for this. The Luz is run by two sisters who speak a bit of English but if you try out your Spanish expect a barrage of chatty Spanish back! Margarita gave us a complete rundown of the neighborhood. The Luz is in a historically protected district and film director Pedro Almodóvar has a flat across the street. This was our 5th visit to Madrid and we'll be staying here when we return next year. Air conditioned, cable TV, free wireless Internet. hostalluz.com
