Nice place to stay in Madrid

Although this Hostal is not in the VT list eligible to tenfold increase your rating (what kind of objective system is that...), it is definitely a very good place to stay! My friends and I were looking for a cheap place to stay a couple of days in Madrid. This Hostal on the first floor of a building along the Calle de Atocha, is very clean and the staff is very friendly and helpfull. Moreover, the Hostal is located near all the great locations of the city and adjacent to the Plaza Santa Ana, where you will find plenty of nice bars and restaurants. Finally, the price is excellent!
In the same building, on the third floor is the Hostal Martin. I think this place belongs to the same owner, but I am not sure. You can always try this Hostal if the Hostal Cervelo is fully booked (

    Another well located hostal

We actually booked our room with Hostal Martin, but when we got to the hostal we were sent upstairs to Hostal Bermeja. Apparently, there are three hostals that operate under different names that all work together in this same building (the other one is Hostal Cervelo). The location is great, only a two minute walk to Plaza Santa Cruz, five minutes to Plaza Mayor, five minutes to Sol and less than ten minutes to Atocha (the train station). We had a double room with a bathroom. The quarters were a bit cramped, but very clean and the lighting and television all worked well. Every evening when we came in the person at the front desk asked if the temperature was okay in the room. There's no complimentary breakfast, but the location is great. It was relatively quiet and the beds were very comfortable.

Unique Quality: It's a very basic place that is well maintained and the staff is friendly, although nobody speaks English.

    Directions: Near Plaza Santa Cruz

Good value hostal near to Puerta del Sol

The 2 hostals are actually in the same building and run by the same management. The rooms are clean and come with bathroom, TV, A/C and telephone. Good value for money.

Unique Quality: About 5 mins' walk to the Puerta del Sol and Prado Musuem. 2 mins' walk to the Anton Martin metro station and about 15 mins' walk to the Atocha train station. They speak English at the hostals.

Two Star Hostales, clean and convenient!

The accomodation was very basic but clean and in a great location. There was also 24 hour access, if not an English speaker on hand. The were even able to provide a real double bed, a rarity in Europe, plenty of hot water and clean towels. This is also were we got hooked on the BBC channel.

Unique Quality: Not much in the way of uniqueness. Located on Calle Atocha it was close to everything which was my real goal. Two blocks to the metro and walking distance to Museo Prado and many little pubs and tapas bars.
As a cautionary note, you might want to bring earplugs if you expect to sleep. The traffic is bad in Madrid 24 hours a day and the drivers talk MUCHO with their hrons. I doubt you can escape this little inconveniance at any hostal, but maybe at a larger pricyer hotal with inside rooms. Visa is accepted and reservations may be made on the internet.

Directions: Metro stop Anton Martin, check in on first floor, even though your accomodation may be on 1-3.

Impresionantes vistas y mucha historia. Los recomiendo.

Barcelona, Barcelona me encanta Barcelona. Llegamos la primera semana de abril. Hacia frio y llovia.

hello there,
Just got back a week ago from Spain, and here are my recomdations for MAdrid and Granada:
Madrid: Hostal Martin: Great location, cheap, clean, we had a good stay there.

Granada: El numero 8 (casa de rafa) Right in the middle of the Albycin, no cars, its like staying in a little village with the center of granada down the street, views of the Alhambra, not your typical hostel, has a lot of character.

a super place in Barcelona is Hosteria Grau - it is great value and in a quiet street but is only minutes from the top of the Ramblas.
i have stayed there three times and my in-laws stay there too (if it's good enough for the in-laws......)

in madrid i would recommend
Hostal Horizonte
Located right in the center. They are doing remodelling sometime this year though. Some friends stayed there and liked it a lot, its simple but charming.
Have a nice trip!
