Not particularly wanting to stay in the Puerto del Sol area, what would be another area that has good metro connections, a reasonable amount of 'life' and isn't too far from sites such as the Prado?

Re: Areas

by Jefie

You might enjoy staying in the Barrio de las letras (look around calle de las huertas; Anton Martin metro station, linea 1). It's a short walk alway from the Prado and there definitely is a lot of life in the area, especially in the evening.

That's hugely helpful, you two, thank you. By "life" I mean not an area where once 5 o'clock comes, everyone retreats behind closed doors and the streets are empty! Nor do I want an area that is noisy and full of bars and discos that are on the go all night long.

Thank you, Pedmar. I have experienced Madrid once before but now being older, I really would like to find accommodation that is out of the main thrust of activity, so that when we do go back, all is quiet. So, should have good communication links. I will certainly bear you in mind as being an old Madrid-hand. In the early stages of planning quite a complicated trip.

Thank you for now!

Travel Tips for Madrid

Torres Blancas - House with a personality!

by El_Sueco

Sometimes you see a house that has a very special personality (or attitude, perhaps the modern people say).
Look at this swallow-nest house! I took it immediately to my heart. Here I would like to live!
This building was constructed in 1961-1968, and it made the architect famous - Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza
(1918-2000). He was rewarded the prize "Premio de la Excelencia Europea" in 1994.
The "White towers" were originally thought to be two and they were also ment to be white. However, that was changed for economical reasons, but the name is still standing.

Av de America 37.
Height: 81 m / 266 ft.
Floors: 25
(thanks to Grikoj, who gave me the name of the building, so I could find some interesting data)

Avenida de Gran Vía
As every other metropoly in the world Madrid needed a splendid boulevard but had none. So the plan was invented to create one: during 40 years (starting in 1917) more than 300 houses and 14 streets had to vanish to make this impressive boulevard become reality as you could see it todays. It starts at Calle de Alcalá and ends at Plaza España. It is Madrid’s very center of entertainment and shopping. The architecture of some buildings is fabulous and make Madrid a very Metropolis-style city in my opinion. But also the traffic is pretty impressive here and as a pedestrian you better wait for green light or you might get killed.

Local dressing

by SirRichard

At the pic you can see the traditional dress of Madrid. They are mainly wear in the local festivities of San Isidro (15th May). At this pic you can see my younger daughter Celia wearing it at a school show :-))

Day trip to Segovia. It's a two-hour train trip (trains leave from Atocha). Really worth seeing. I was amazed with the beauty of the city. Don't miss the Alcazar, the Cathedral and the Roman Aqueduct.

Mojitos in a Central Groovy Vibe

by mollymoo0oo0 about El Imperfecto

A nice place by day as well as night! It's a groovy little bar tucked down a side street off the main stretch from Puerta del Sol. Interesting paraphernalia adorns the walls, while mojitos and other cocktails (with or without alcohol) - though not the greatest - make a nice escape from the business outside - or a great start to a night out.

As well as the usual bar stock, there are a nice range of infusions and some good hot chocolate here too :) Be Yourself!!
