    near airport

I stayed overnight and got a hotel near Airport since it was cheaper than booking a hotel in the center. Overall, my stay was ok. I didn't really have any problems. Also had breakfast in the hotel. To take note though is that it takes an 45min - 1hour by train from this area to get to the center. Overall, i would say it was ok, nothing great, but nothing bad.

    Unique Quality: clean, simple

Any dangerous or seedy neighborhoods I should avoid booking my hotel in?

by travelnut71

Like every city in the world they all have some seedy or dangerous neighborhood. Can anyone point out which I should avoid in Madrid? I have 2 babies so...

I would not book a hotel North of Gran Via, at least the next 4-5 blocks up. When I wandered through the area I noticed a number of corners where there were prostitutes and what appeared to be some drug dealers. One of the hotels I like staying it is the TRYP Cibeles on Gran Via, but just one block North of the area was "interesting". With two babies I would be more concerned on the metro where you would be a target simply being distracted by the young ones. One of the best areas to stay in is the Salamanca district, North of Parc Ritero. Karl

Travel Tips for Madrid

Plaza Mayor.

by Maurizioago

This square was initially built between 1617 and 1620 on the request of King Felipe II. After a terrible fire it was totally redesigned in 1790.

Over the centuries it was used as marketplace, bullring, inquisition and execution place.

In Plaza Mayor there are some shops; many cafes and restaurants. There is also a tourist office.

What styles to be found? 1. neo-classism (18 th. century. simplistic style not decorative but pure. the Prado is a good example of this) 2. neo-mudejar. (19. century. arabic style. the Aguirre building is a good example of it) 3. Habsburg style (16 th. century. the monastery de las Desalzas Reales is a good example of it). 4. art nouveau (20 th century style. the sociedad general is a good example) 5. modernism (the Puerta de Europe, madrid's striking towers are in this style.

Madrid’s shield is a bear and a strawberry tree. Bears were once pleni around Madrid. As the city got its own right for hunting its property this shield came into being. “madrid, a good place for hunting swine and bears.” But lot of things about the weapon are onto debate. The gender of the bear: is he male or female? And the tree, is it a strawberry tree or are there other things growing in the tree? You can find plenty of bears statuettes in Madrid, but the well-known statues is at Sol. It’s a popular meeting point for locals.

Hammam (turkish baths) in Madrid

In the centre of Madrid (Atocha street, 14 at Jacinto Benavente Sq) you can enjoy a typical arab hammam, and relax in water, massages, nice odours... a different experience!!!
From 15 to 22 euros.

Best Flamenco- Corral de la Moreria!

by RachelAllisonSmith about Corral de la Moreria

In my opinion, Corral de la Moreria has the best Flamenco in Madrid! I've been studying abroad in Madrid for the past 4 months, and trust me, have visited my share of Flamenco Tablaos- and none compare to Corral. The optional dinner is delicious, the dancers are phenomenal, and the atmosphere is very exciting and lively. Tickets are either 32 or 35 euros, make sure to make reservations ahead of time! : ) Casual, but you can dress up if you're in the mood as some are : )
