Highly Recommended Hotel

A great, central hotel very close to the Prado and Retiro park. Tremendously helpful staff who go out of their way to help. We loved the place and plan to return. The hotel has a boutique feel, our room was spacious and the bathroom was a large size by European standards. Our room had an oversized patio which was a bonus.

Teatro Lope de Vega

Madrid is the cultural Spanish capital. The high quality of its theatres and music halls, compared to London or New York, is not to be found in any other city of Spain.
This Lope de Vega theatre, named after our genius of literature and prolific writer Lope de Vega, offers every year a different wonderful show: Evita Peron, The Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Abba’ Mamma mia, etc.
Along the street Gran Via you have many other interesting theatres and cinemas.

Wondering how long the drive to Santiago would be if I rented a car, and what places of interest I could stop at along the way.

www.viamichelin.com will give you route and estimated drive times. There are a number of Santiagos available, so make sure you choose the one you want.

Yes, you probably mean Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia, northeast of Spain.
Some places you can visit: Valladolid, Zamora, Salamanca...

More interesting places, more or less on the way, depending how you plan your route: Toro, Astorga, León.... not to say the many beuatiful small villages.
How much time do you have to play with?
You can do this drive in one day, in one week or more... do you plan to stay overnight somewhere (and how many nights) or you mean places to stop along the way to rest/eat for a couple of hours?

Thanks, everyone!
I'm doing the English route of El Camino, from Ferrol to S. de Compostela. The current plan is to fly into Madrid, and spend a day there. Day 2 drive to Santiago, stopping along the way at some of these places then settling into Santiago. On day 3 I take a bus to Ferrol and begin the 5 day journey.

Yes indeed.
But for the UK and Ireland (for your future reference) it is better to use
http://www.theaa.com/route-planner/index.jsp
which has info about roadworks, traffic blackspots, speed cameras etc as well as the same info as viamichelin.
