In arrived in Madrid on a Sunday after having rung round various hostels and pensiones that were all full. Brilliant hostel right in the centre of Madrid. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable about Madrid and are happy to offer advice. Lots of information available in the hostel including vouchers for various things i.e free ice cream.
Everything is clean and works.
Unique Quality: Internet, No curfew, no lockout, Breakfast included in the price.
Directions: Opera, only 5 minutes walk from Plaza Mayor.
We stayed in a dorm room, and that was alright. The hostel is quite small, so it's easy to make friends with the other guests.
The showers are good, there's internet access, the staff is friendly, the kitchen is ok although it's a bit small.
I really like that breakfast's included in the price! =)
What can be annoying during summer is that there's no air condition in the rooms, so if you're sensitive, that can be a problem.
This Hostel is well located in Madrid, close to Puerta Sol, if you like to walk and save some money with public transport just stay there, rooms is clean , friendly staff , the only problem is after 23:00 you must go to bed or leave some bar, sometimes you just stay room talk, but is not allow after this time.
lockers ares avaliable, but dont forget your padlock(you can buy on reception too).
the day that you must leave is possible pay 5 euros and using facilities in hostel.
you can book using www.gomio.com
Unique Quality: Well locate
fair price
Directions: the hostel street is beside burger king restaurant. (Opera station)
los amigos backpackers is a very well run hostel that is the perfect place to stay if you are young and social.
it has a very youngish atmosphere and the staff is very friendly and cheerful
Unique Quality: internet, kitchen, common room, good showers and no lock out are just some of the things that makes this place a very good choice if you don't mind sharing a room with a few other people and like a communal atmosphere.
Directions: one minute walk from opera metro station.
I didn't look much for a good hostel but found this. Very close to the center and to the Royal Palace.
Nice people and good athmosphere. Backpackers style hostel.
Breakfast included for 16 €/night.
In general was nice but if you can find some other with less guests you will have a better athmosphere to exchange ideas with travellers.
Directions: Opera District
I stayed at this backpacker's hostel (not exclusively a youth hostel) with a friend of mine.
Co-ed dorm style living, bunk beds, common bathrooms and showers, use of kitchen, common living room, 2 computers with internet access, and enforcement of quiet time/lights out.
Free bread, jam, butter, and coffee/tea for breakfast.
Feb 2012 Update: It seems like Los Amigos changed locations. My review from my stay in 2004 was from their old address: Campomanes N 6,, , Madrid, Comunidad de Madrid 280. Their new address is now: Calle Arenal 26 Piso 4 - 28013- MADRID
This sympathetic hostel is situated in the plain centre of Madrid, near the Puerta del Sol at the metro stop "Opera". Young people working for backpackers, cheap and clean, perfectly for people who are happy with basic comfort.
Unique Quality: Nice common room, you gotta be there when they open their bar! It only happens when someone feels like keeping the bar... but happy people and cheap drinks!
Directions: Puerta del Sol
This is a really great hostel, we only paid 15euro per night, breakfast included. It is very central, near to the metro Opera. Rooms, showers, ... everything was clean. Very nice staff.
Check out their site: http://www.losamigoshostel.com
Unique Quality: you can rent everything at the reception from towels, to a lock for the locker in the room (only 1euro). There is also a posibility to use the internet, what was very cheap, only 1euro per hour. You can also use the washingmachine.
Every night (from 19 to 23h) the bar in the common room is open, only 2euro for a wiskey with coke, good opertunity to meet the other travellers.
