Me and a buddy are planning a summer trip in spain. Our first and last stop is Madrid. What are the best attractions?

Would definitely visit the Retiro Park - I think it really captures the glorious past of Spain, very relaxing, near the Museo del Prado and Free! Enjoy Madrid, Norman :)

Look at the VT Madrid pages for hundreds of ideas of what to see and do, all written by locals and visitors. Use the destination searchbox top right of this page to find them.

I wouldn't miss:

-Retiro Park
-Royal Palace
-Cathedral's crypt (more beautiful than the Cathedral)
-El Rastro (street market: on Sundays)
-El Prado Museum
-Plaza Mayor and surroundings
-El Capricho Park
-Walking around Paseo del Prado, Cibeles and Gran Vía
-Templo de Debod (authentic Egiptian temple)
-Eating tapas in Latina and enjoying nightlife

If you have time enough, there are many other things to do!!

Travel Tips for Madrid

Peurta Del Sol Musicians

by jamiesno

I already mentioned in my tips the buskers and other street perfomers. Here is a local band that played regularly at Peurta Del Sol during the couple of times I visited Madrid.

As I previously mentioned listening to this music makes exploring the Peurta Del Sol much more enjoyable.

Dinner like the locals do

by ger4444

As said before: comida (the meal) in Madrid has different rules. In case you want to join the habits of the locals be aware of the following. When you want to have a warm meal, go to the restaurant around 3 pm, and expect it to be open till max 4.30 pm. So if you arrive at 6 pm at a bar or restaurant dont be surprised that they are either closed or dont serve food. If you want dinner around 6 pm you have to go to the moore touristic restaurants which is of cuz less fun. At around 10 pm its dinner time again, either you make a reservation for the restaurants (the neighboarhood of Chuecca has many trendy and cheap restaurants) or visit some tapa's bars (La Latina is exactly the right place to find them ; near the Plaza de la Paja there is a street with some 20 tapa's bars which are every night overcrowded by locals and have an excellent atmosphere)

Botanical paths

by tzuki

Recently, I have dropped to the Botanical garden in Madrid. It seems a small park from outside and it is not as big as the Retiro park (the main park inside the city) but keeps beautiful paths and floral sides.

Besides, the exterior gardens has also a lovely collection of bonsais, cactus and I think also, some orchids too.

It is one of my favourite´s places in Madrid as you know I like to photo botanical patterns.

At this time, there are colourful flowers blowing up and nice smeelings too.

I have taken lots of pictures last time but need to be devloped so I guess, you should wait for a bit.

In the mean time will give you the web address so you can check it, if interested.

El Corte Ingles

by Luisanna about Department Stores

I really like department stores overall and found El Corte Ingles a very nice store. It offered the shopper everything under one roof. As a tourist your curious as to what other stores not in your own country have to offer and let me tell you brand name clothes, shoes, perfumes and friendly people. I found the clothing to be on the expensive side. Now perfumes where reasonably priced.

The neighborhood of Huertas,...

by jglenn

The neighborhood of Huertas, close to Puerta del Sol (metro Sol). Dozens of pubs, restaurants, cervezarias, tiny eating spots, whatever. Some of my favorites are O'Donnells (Irish), Urogallo (tapas), and Naturbier (with homemade beer).
