Travel Tips for Madrid

Explore PLAZA MAYOR!

by Krystynn

Conveniently located in downtown Madrid, this 17th century wide, open square/ courtyard is a common meeting place for tourists and the locals alike. It was once a place of great importance where public executions, great festivals and the crowning of the king took place.

Today, this whole area is filled with lovely tapa bars and souvenir shops.

If you wish to people-watch, the Plaza Mayor is also a good place to conduct your 'hobby'. ;-)

My trip included the weekend...

by Linky_Pinky

My trip included the weekend of the 8/9/10 of February, which was Carnival with people dressing up in fancy dress and there was a free concert in the Plaza Mayor with bands, all culminating in a prossesion on Sunday.__________________________________________________________________

Sorry didn't have a picture of Carnival here's one taken at my local ASDA.

Valle de los Caidos

by cfuentesm

Take a cab from El Escorial to visit this stounding place. Franco built the monument of Santa Cruz del Valle de los Caidos (Valley of the Fallen) as a memorial to those who died during the Civil War. It's the most amazing granite sculpture I have ever seen. Really imposing. Also visit the church interiors.

Do you speak English? Quieres Hablar Español?

by mollymoo0oo0 about Book World

Book World is a good place to start if you are teaching or learning English, looking for English books or indeed learning Spanish from English.

There is a wide range of English books for learning, grammar, vocubulary... including an excellent selection of dictionaries - including specialised dictionaries (legal, science, etc.). Also there are many books about Spanish history and culture (in English and Spanish).

Additionally, a good stock of books are included for those learning Spanish. Prices vary in comparison to those on popular internet sites (such as amazon.com) and can be significantly cheaper or more expensive, so you may want to compare.

Staff here are helpful with enquiries. In comparison with other bookshops and online prices, Book World is fairly average - sometimes more, sometimes less.

Mojitos taste better in Cafe Belen

by agarcia about Cafe Belen

With its dim candlelights, soft chill out music, and notable drinks (specially Mojitos), Cafe Belen has all the needed ingredients for qualifying as the perfect starting point for a night out in Madrid. Certainly all those qualities are behind the popularity of Cafe Belen, a popularity that could be easily prove by trying to get a decent table during a weekend night there... a nearly impossible task. But the real reason could not be accounted, nor described, nor pictured. Cafe Belen just "has it"; the quality that makes it suitable either for couples in the romantic mood or for large groups looking for a good chat... or for a spirit invocation, as some people pointed out after seeing the pics of Madrid last VT meeting ;-)
