Food

by nino224

Hi,

I´m flying from Santiago to Madrid and then on to Miami.

Can someone terll me what foods are NOT allowed to travel? I want to take back some cheeses and other packaged goodies.

This may help for Madrid - sorry the URL is so long!

http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:sBDJRSA7ZM4J:customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/downloadFile%3FcontentID%3DHMCE_PROD_010856+Travel+to+Spain+-+what+foods+are+allowed&hl=en&gl=us&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESiyQyFoA-Q3-7M6iB0-zxBdqAb_5BTZVG7Qn4ivMzwwj3Pjh7ojwKqOwWqty4TF9L1xVRrzpIg4LDbm24mUUG6680bIqLtZBvoCMS5dtUFPEAst-wngDUeBSLiHEEGQXRAp6H-1&sig=AHIEtbSVubvhUCI-BvqOyLq4uN_2KZEi6A

As you will see, many products - including cheese - are banned from travel into the EU from non-EU countries. Now, are you planning on buying the products in Santiago or in Madrid? If purchasing in Madrid for bringing back to the US, the rules will be different. For instance, we were able to bring packaged cheese home from the Netherlands as long as it was still in its original, unopened wrapper.

Just a note on the document I sent the link for:

It specifies the UK on the cover but actually covers common rules for the entire EU - so includes Spain.

Re: Food

Actually, I want to transport cheese from Spain back to the US.

Re: Food

Bringing the cheese into the USA shouldn't pose a problem--unless the quantity is high enough to be considered "Commercial." I've brought cheese, from Europe in to the USA and had no problem.

Still it would be a good idea to check with the CBP website:

http:/www.customs.gov/

There you'll find the definitive answer.

Re: Food

Great!

Does it need to be in my checked bag or can it be carry-on?

Re: Food

I'm sure either would be fine, unless it was exceptionally smelly. In any case you'd have to declare it when going through Customs.

>I'm sure either would be fine, unless it was exceptionally smelly.<

LOL! Then you either have the choice of smelling up your checked bag or wrinkling the noses of fellow passengers. I think I'd choose the former over the latter - that would be the considerate thing to do. :)

Travel Tips for Madrid

Miscellaneous Tips....

by Donna_in_India

Meeting New People and Seeing New Places

These tips are based on my last 8 weeks of traveling in Europe/Africa:

1. Buy/pre-order as many museum/attraction tickets online as you can.
2. Ask the taxi fare before taking off in a taxi, especially if it’s late at night or coming from an airport.
3. Charge your camera batteries every night.
4. If you have a Eurail pass and need to make reservation make them in Europe. It’s a lot less expensive.
5. If you’re climbing a few hundred steps up a tower, monument, etc. go only a clear, sunny day.
6. Learn at least Hello, Thank you, and Goodbye in the foreign language of the countries you are visiting.
7. Turn your cell phones off inside churches, museums, etc. If it rings and you must take the call, do it outside!
8. If there’s a running commentary (live or recorded), be polite and be quiet.
9. Dress appropriately and be respectful in churches.
10. If you’re traveling with children, don’t let them disrupt others around you. If they cry or throw a tantrum, take them outside.
11. If you have a complaint, do it reasonably without yelling and cursing.
12. Regarding pictures:
a. If there are signs saying “No pictures”, don’t take pictures! There’s a reason for the signs. Do you really, really need that picture of Mona Lisa to prove you’ve seen it?
b. Learn how to use your camera before the trip. If there are signs saying “No flash”, make sure you know how to use the camera without it.
c. If you see a couple or family with one person taking pictures of the other(s), offer to take a picture of both/all of them. Maybe they’ll reciprocate.
13. Check local holidays. Since many museums and stores will be closed, you’ll need to have other plans for the day. (Most stores throughout much of Europe are closed on Sunday.)
14. Don’t try to do too much. Leave some open time to just explore.
15. You’re on vacation so relax and have a good time!

Internet access right in the heart of the Puerta del Sol! EasyInternet, that familiar orange logo shop, you can find it just north of the PdS at c/de la Montera, 10...that's right, on the CALLE DE LA MONTERA. It's a great place to get yourself online when you're on the road in Madrid here, the rates depend on the time of day, just plug in a euro or two to the handy coupon vending machine, get your ticket, pick a computer. Simple and safe. Repeat, SAFE. -)))

Oso y Madroño, Plaza del Sol

by Carmela71

This is one of the emblematic scultures at Plaza del Sol.

The translation in english is the Bear and the Strawberry Tree. (well not so much good the tree.. but not sure how to explain it)

This is one of the symbols of Madrid, at Calle Carmen (hehehe always I can find a street with my name around Spain lol)

Ah!! I forgot, here you can see all the shopping area, Calle Carmen, Calle Preciados....

Navacerrada

by Carmela71

Navacerrada, wonderfull mountains , just outside Madrid, where you can just walk, do skying ....

I had gone twice, but a long time ago lol, to do hiking. On my first time I trusted in my guide (well I was supposed to lol after so long toguether) and we got lost, finally we found the train line and got safety to where we left the car.

You can come here for good prices on charter flights and flights to Asia. They speak english.
The office is at 22nd floor of the tallest building in Plaza de España. From here you can have wonderful views of the city (and even take some pictures!). Use the correct elevators (group 1), don't get mistaken.
