Lively Weekend in Madrid

by aidandur

Hi All,
I am visiting Madrid with a few friends in Mar 2010.
I'll be honest, its a lads weekend, and we're hoping to sample Madrids Finest bars and night life (amd maybe see some sights during the day too ;o)

I believe Madrid is quite large, so I was looking for advice about which area to stay in....Typically when we go to citiese we always stay in the livliest parts of town, near bars and clubs etc....However I cant really work out where this is located in Madrid

Can you recommend an 'area' in the centre of all the lively bars clubs etc. I can then use the many Hotel websites to find a suitable hotel in this area - The sort of place where you wouldnt recommend your Granny stay ;o)

Thanks in advance

Aidan

Actually, most of the bars/clubs are within a one mile radius of the center, which is the Puerta del Sol. So stay around there or Near the Plaza Santa Ana/Huertas section just to the east/southeast. When you are looking, note that a "hostal" in Spain is not the same thing as a "hostel", most are cheaper than hotels, with fewer amenities, but with rooms with private bathrooms.

You can get a lot of information at this website: http://www.timeout.com/madrid/
I think it's worth it to buy the latest TimeOut Madrid Guidebook. It explains the nightlife in detail, the various types of places, the neighborhoods etc.

A couple of things to keep in mind: The party starts late and goes on until dawn. You have to pace yourself. You go to dinner at 9:30 PM. The bars start to fill up at around midnight. The clubs do not really get going until 3 AM.

If you are drinking spirits be aware that drink measures are enormous compared to the UK.

Hi Guys,

Thanks a mill for that. I'll check out some hotels on line in that general area, ie Puerta del Sol.

Looking forward to visiting. Ive heard great things about the city. So far, Ive been to Seville, Barcelona and Taragona, so looking forward to checking out Madrid.

Thanks again

Aidan

El Corte Ingles

by Christianne

Something that I really enjoyed in Madrid was the shopping in El Corte Ingles.
Areas that you can find El Corte Ingles:
1.Calla, Plaza de Callao
2.Preciados, Preciados 3
3.Goya, Goya 76,87
4.Castellana,Raimundo Fernandez Villaverde, 79
5.Princesa, Princesa 42
6.Arapiles, 10,12
7.Serrano 47

Ticket touts

by MarkySummers

If you are looking to go to a game at the Bernabau, my advice would be to buy tickets on-line or get them at latest 24hrs before the game. All but the lowest category games will be almost impossible to get tickets via the box office on the day, which leaves you in the hands of the touts. While forgeries are rare, you will be very lucky indeed if your ticket is for anywhere but the top tier in which it is virtually impossible to see whats going on, its almost like watching a football match from a plane. Many of the touts rely on English fans turning up an hour before kick off thinking they can just pay on the gate.

Cuartel del Conde Duque

by agarcia

One of the most innovative museums of Madrid could be found in the impressive building that once formed the military quarters of Conde Duque; quite a neat usage of military resources, if you ask me. The admission is completely free, and the carefully choose cultural selection makes it an indispensable visit, imho. Besides, Conde Duque area is quickly becoming one of the most interesting in Madrid, less touristy that La Latina or Huertas, but offering some of the best bars and restaurants of the city.

where Frankie used to drink...

by sue_stone about Museo Chicote

This is a 1930s art deco bar, which is famous for never having closed during the Civil War.

The seats are still the originals, which means that you could be sitting where any number of famous people sat many years ago.

We had a couple of cocktails and soaked up the atmosphere.

Shame about the really tacky 80's music they were playing - where was the Rat Pack when we needed them!!
