Thank you, Everyone!!

by roserosada

Recently I asked for directions on how to get from Barajas Airport to Plaza Mayor and about tapas around Plaza Mayor; People, you were right on target. I was able to have tapas, visit nearby sites such as the Palacio Real, etc., and return on time to catch my flight to Athens. Thank you so much. On my return, I was also able to go to Plaza Mayor; even though I had less time to spare, I ended having more time since it was very quick at Passport Control and I used a different route using Lines 8, 10, and 1, eliminating the change at Line 3.

Rose, I was not one of the posters who helped you with Madrid, but I am delighted to see you return here and post your thanks. That is what keeps us going and makes this such a great site. Glad to hear you had a good time in Madrid. Hope you will build some pages with pics and tips.

yes I agree, its great when somebody is coming back and telling the participants of a former forum what happened to their tips, BUT I think its always best, when this is done directely into that same discussion, so everbody who participated will be automatically informed and not only the people who go through the lastest Madrid-forum !

Agree with both above. Thanks very much for coming back to let us know that the assistance you received here was helpful. We live for that, and it is sadly not a regular thing. Much love......d:o)

Travel Tips for Madrid

late nights

by sethnem

for those coming from the states, madrilenos do things much later at night. dinner may begin @ 10pm followed by a drink @12 and then to the disco so the night begins and ends much later than many are used to. its a different way of life and in many ways as as the saying goes "work to live, not live to work!"

by ger4444

Churros are stems made of paste with sugar in it. you tradinionally dip them in warm chocolad. Madrilenians love them. They are eaten during 10-11 am at many of the chocolateries. But also during the night they eat them after a night going out. it then gets crowded at the chocolateries. Churros are eaten together with coffee. at night it makes you sober again. try churros at Casa Manolo Jovellanos 7, or Chocolateria San Gines Pzo. San Ginés 5.

"Doña Manolita" for Xmas Lottery

by SirRichard

Xmas Lottery is a tradition in all Spain, but in Madrid the real tradition is to buy the lottery in some specific shops, as this old "Doña Manolita" in Gran Via. There are some huge queues on the street when Xmas come.

Congreso de los Diputados

Since Madrid is the capital of Spain, you would expect to find a building that resembles the Capitol building in Washington DC, or perhaps the Houses of Parliament in London UK, but it's not quite the case. The Palacio de las Cortes de España is a very nice but rather modest building located on the Carrera de San Jeronimo, next to the Thyssen Museum. It was built in 1850 under Queen Isabel II in a neoclassical design reminiscent of a Greek temple. It is only possible to visit the building on Saturday mornings, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm (check out the Website for more information). If you can't make it, it's still worth taking a look at the main entrance, which is guarded by two rather mean-looking lions!

Follow the footsteps of F. Sinatra & Ava Gardner!

by WanderingFinn about Chicote

We found a treasure: an old restaurant named Chicote, which had been kept in the style of its golden years. That is why its colours are quite dark and many may not like it. But it is history: It used to be a place where people like Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner and Salvador Dali (and many more) used to spend their evenings.

On the walls you can find some old pictures and other memorabilia of the time of the stars. A very nice place after all these cold this century's discos and clubs.

Just for information: the place is not a disco, there is no live music nor dance floor. It is mainly meant for having a drink, meeting friends, talking, perhaps later going to a disco or nightclub. No dress code. Here again anyhow please remember the usual European (the more south, the more important) culture and habit: men should always wear trousers or jeans in the evenings, never shorts or sports gear.
(In the Mediterranean countries the men never wear shorts even at daytime at summer in cities; always trousers. An exception to this is of course the fact that when they are on the beach when they have a day off or are on a holiday). That is not trying to look "better or richer than I am" or "trying to get girls" or anything as stupid - it is simply respect towards their companion, the food, their family and so on.
