Tips for culture and architecture interests?

by chris.hh

Hi you guys,
does anybody have good tips what to do in Madrid within two or three days? I am interested in architecture - rather modern and contempary than historic. Are there some great new buildings to have a look at?
What are good places to go out in the evenings for having dinner and a beer, maybe some good music spots? I like to meet people from Madrid rather than tourists...
Thanx for your help, Chris.

To add to Pedro's good advice, check the new "4 torres" area, the Jean Nouvel's new part of the Reina Sofia museum and the "Caixaforum"
You may have a look at some of my pictures of these here:

Another nice area to hang out at night, non-touristy, is Argüelles.

I forgot to say that if you're arriving by plane, the T-4 is another eye-candy for photographers and those interested in contemporary architecture.

Hi Isa and Pedro, thanks for your tips. I will go through them the weekend and do some resarch and have a look into the map! Your images are great, Isa. I get back on you later. Gracias, Chris.

Travel Tips for Madrid

Money Exchange - Buy euros prior to your trip !!!!

by Frisbeeace

Fortunately I had been warned to buy euros at my country because the rate would be better. Then I bought my euros at a exchange rate of 1 euro = 1.225 dollars. In Spain the exchange rate was much worse everywhere, around 1 euro = 1.30 dollars. I guess that it is even more convenient to charge your credit card rather to sacrifice your dollar bills while travelling.

El Escorial

by Christianne

Visit EL ESCORIAL about 50 km from Madrid.
Monastery/Palace built by Philip II in the 16th century. Juan de Herrera and Juan Bautista de Toledo were the architects.

Main attractions of the monastery

La Capilla Mayor
The Pantheon (The kings tombs)
The Throne-Hall

Best Time To Conquer The City

by Krystynn

If you ask me when is the best time to visit Madrid, I'd most definitely recommend the month of OCTOBER when the weather is much cooler.

No need to bring any heavy sweaters either. And what's more, you'd be rewarded with lovely glimpses of the fall foliage... a time when the trees turn orangy-yellow and the whole place just takes on a totally new look.

I love autumm - my favorite season!

Museo de los Orígenes

by Redang

The Museum of the Origins is in the house where San Isidro, the patroon of the city, lived until his death, and takes you through the History of Madrid.

It was founded in the 9th century receiving the name of Mageit, and King Felipe II stablished here the capital of Spain in 1.561. There is a con, everything is just in Spanish.

How to get there:
Plaza de San Andrés, 2
28005 Madrid

Fax: (+34) 91 364 51 49
Metro: La Latina (line 5)
Bus: 3, 17, 18, 23, 35, 50, 60, 65 and 148

Me by Melia - A Bar With A View!

by ALANinWORCS69 about Trendy areas

Wow! What A place... Currently "The" place to be seen in Madrid. Located at the former Reina Victoria Hotel (basically a hip rebranding by Sol Melia Hotels) and dominating Plaza De Santa Ana lies the rooftop bar at "ME By Melia".
Seven floors up and decked out in sumptous furniture, featuring cosy enclosed sofas in neutral fabrics and rustic effects... all on different terraced levels. Great views over the city and and wonderful place to sit and sip cocktails whilst people-watching... ermmm, oh yeh, very sexy bar staff to serve you those cocktails too.
Not cheap for drinks but you're paying for location here also. Do it... an amazing place, well worth the money.
I had a sneak look in the day too... see the other 4 pics!!!
