La puerta de Alcalá
Built by Francisco Sabatini in 1769, and ordered by Carlos III who wanted Madrid to have a monument recalling the Arch of Triunph. It´s one of the most carismatic and elegant monuments in Madrid. This door, was the ancient entrance to the city from the 'Camino de Aragón' (Path to Aragon).
Sorteo de Navidad - El Gordo
by suvanki
I was quite surprised to see such long queues outside this shop in Sol.
Closer inspection revealed that it was a queue for lottery or lotto tickets!
During my trips to different Spanish cities, I'd seen lotto kiosks, and men selling tickets out on the streets, but not witnessed queues quite like this!
I later realised that they were probably hoping to buy the winning ticket for the Sorteo de Navidad, Gordo De Navidad or the name I was more familiar with - El Gordo, or the Fat One.
This tradition has been going on since 1812, where Spaniards, including those who don't normally gamble, buy a ticket or a few! Apparently the place to buy a ticket is Dona Manolita on Grand Via Colon, which has been open since 1931, and locals expect to win at least something in this Lucky Town.
The lotto is also played by many foreigners, but there have been quite a few scams- Where gullible people have parted with money on the promise of receiving a fortune.
The draw is made on National TV at 1100hrs in Madrid. This is considered the start of Christmas!
In 2007 it was on 22nd December.

Strictly For Fans of REAL MADRID F.C.
by Krystynn
If you're a big fan of Mr Perez (the big boss) and the boys at Real Madrid (I'm referring to Figo, Raul, Zidane, Beckham, Carlos, Casillas, Ronaldo, Guti... ya know), you would probably think of ways to buy a ticket to watch a weekend La Liga match played at the Bernabeu Stadium.
I have never been to the Bernabeu Stadium - yet. But should my favorite boys at AC Milan battle against the Real Madrid boys in the Champion's League, I WILL definitely head to the Bernabeu. Pronto. ;-D
So, if you see a lady dressed in a red and black striped shirt with a red/black scarf... screaming her lungs out inside the stadium...er... no need to call the ambulance. It's just me. ;-) You probably can't miss me. I'll stick out like a sore thumb against the sea of all-WHITE SHIRT Madrid fans!
P.S. The only person I like in Real Madrid is the captain himself - Raul Gonzalez. ;-) Cute and multi-talented!

Hi-jinks in Handyman Tavern
by Minority19 about The Handyman's Tavern
Absolutely wonderful service! On first glances the place looked slightly dead, but once we got behind the bar teaching the barman how to make a coke and guinness, and the owner a baby guinness, things definitley looked up! They put on U2 and The Corrs for the 5 irish girls who invaded their pub, and even provided a complimentry shot of god-only-knows-what! The waitress, from Argentina, could tell us almost everythinga bout Irish history and the troubles in the North, took photos and was just generally loca :0) We had two wonderful nights there, and I would definitley recommend the place! No dress code.... c'mon IT'S AN IRISH PUB!!
