old flame reunion in Madrid

by Maggyta

So we're in our 30s, avail and will meet after almost 12 yrs...good old Facebook!
I'd like to go out dancing but not to a place with blasting music or over the top shoving and squeezing through crowds to get from one point to another. Can you recommend a nice, classy yet trendy definitely latin dancing place??

I have been to Madrid several times, but can't specifically answer this. You might try looking at the Time Out Madrid Website http://www.timeout.com/madrid/search/?tag_id=4239&order=nameAsc&pageNumber=2

I did check out one disco place on a Saturday Night. It was EMPTY at 2:00 AM! Too early for the crowds.

It has been quite a few years since my last disco night in Madrid so things may have changed, but this place may be worth it, if only for the setting:

I can't recommend you any places playing latin music (there are, but usually do not falling in the "classy yet trendy" kind)

In any case, as said above do not expect any action before 3am. Most people have a late dinner, then head to bars and small clubs and only when these shut down head to the discos.

Travel Tips for Madrid

A free ticket to La Belle Durmiente? Wow!

by Pinoy

A Thanksgiving weekend in Madrid was an unforgetable memory. Who would ever thought I would be rubbing elbows with Spanish socialites and royalties (well almost) at the premiere gala of La Belle Durmiente in Teatro Real? In my hotel room, I was lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, and thinking in a few hours I'll be heading back to New York City (bummer!). It was my last night and why not make the most of it? I got up, put on my pants, shirt and coat and said goodbye to the walls. I headed towards Puerta del Sol turned left and walked through Calle del Arenal. I saw a big crowd in front of Teatro Real and behind those police barriers, one spectator told me they were waiting for the arrival of Queen Sofia. I said, ''Wow''! I've never seen a real Queen in my life - unless you live in NYC! But, there was no way I could take a glance on her with this big crowd. So I backed out and sat on the bench away from the crowd. Five minutes later, a distinguised man wearing a tuxedo walked towards me and asked me if I wanted to see the show. Without any hesitations (which I didn't even think he would joke), I said yes, and he handed me his extra ticket free! (You can enlarge the evidence with envy.) He briskly walked back to the theatre and yelled back at me ''I'll see you in there''. As I walked in front of Teatro Real, a guard stopped me and asked my ticket. I showed it to him and he waved at one of the ushers standing by the main door. The usher escorted me to the second floor (as I was planning ahead of what to do if I get arrested for possession of a fake ticket). He opened the door to the tier box and the man who gave me the ticket was there and gave me a thumb up. The Royal box was just three tier box away where I was sitting in; one of the best seats and most importantly, the best view of Queen Sofia. A lesson for you, never leave without your camera!

Cambio de la Guardia (Changing of the Guard)

by Redang

La Guardia Real (the Royal Guard), is the personal guard of the King of Spain and his familiy. This is a new event, don't thing that it has been taking place for decades; maybe in the future, it will become an old tradition.

It takes place every Wednesday from 11,00 to 14,00 (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.), every 30 minutes except when official events are sheduled or bad weather.

Where: At the Puerta del Príncipe (Prince's Gate) which is otuside the Palace (Plaza de Oriente).

And every first Wednesday of the month, there is solemn Changing of the Guard (about 40 minutes) at 12,00 (noon) except August and September, official events are scheduled or bad weather.

Where: Plaza de la Armería (Armery Square).

Manzanares River

by agarcia

Many other European capitals would had treasure a riverside such as the one that the Manzanares river provides to Madrid, as it has some of the most remarkable views that this city could offer. I'm sure that, under a different "management", this would have being a much more benign location, where local people and visitors could equally enjoy from the fantastic sunsets, the freshness of the presence of the river and the romantic environment that even the more mediocre riverside provide.

This is not the case with Madrid, as someone has the brilliant idea of putting M-30, the main circumvallation highway of the city right by the river, so instead of fancy cafes and couples walking by the sunset, what you get near Manzanares river is heavy traffic and loads of pollution. The situation might change, as the city council has promised to replace the M-30 fumes and cars by a subterranean tunnel.
