3*** hotel in Madrid

by PALLINA

Has anyone ever been in Petit Palace Ducal, located in the Gran Via? If yes, how was its price/quality; if not, can you suggest me another nice SMALL accomodation, from guesthouseS (if any) to 3stars hotel, located in central Madrid? thanks

Io conosco solo L' Hotel Asturias. Si trova in un'ottima posizione. Non lontano da Pl. Mayor. Non so quanto costa. Avevo prenotato la stanza li tramite la mia agenzia.

Buona domenica!

si avevo visto il tuo tip, ma non mi sembrava molto accattivante, a parte la location. Grazie cmq, buona domenica anche a te e buon viaggio!

I don't know that hotel, but when I went to Madrid I stayed at Hotel Pacífico. I paid 60€ for a double room (per room per night if my memory doesn't fail me) plus VAT 7%. Info on my Madrid page.

TOLEDO
See the cathedral. I shall never really grasp how the same building can combine things which I consider marvellous with others, of which the cathedral is proud, which I find frankly hideous. The good bits are stupendous and I am afraid it is well worth while paying for a ticket! Probably finding Santa Cristo de la Luz floodlit. It is tiny and was built in the tenth century as a mosque on the site of an old christian church. Unfortunately it was closed for repair but the exterior is stunning - by day as well.

I was so amazed at how tranquil and nice Madrileños are! Everyone says hi and speaks to you and is very polite! Thats nothing like where I live in Italy! Not saying Italians up north are rude but there is DEFINITELY a difference. Everyone was so open and kind and I felt comfortable.

Real Jardin Botánico III: The Bonsais

by Belsaita

This is the newest addition to the gardens. Felipe Gonzalez, former president of the Spanish government, seems to be fascinated by the art of growing bonsais. During his years at La Moncloa (official residence of the Spanish President), he build a huge collection of these. When he left its charge in 1996, he donated more than 100 bonsais to the Botanical Garden and finally the collection was opened to public in 2004. You can agree or disagree with Gonzalez's politics, but this man really has a great taste as gardener!!

Some were acquired or donated from several countries. But most of them are miniaturized autochthonous trees from different parts of Spain: pine trees, yew trees, oaks... Currently, some the most resistant bonsais are placed outside, in the Terraza de los Laureles (a nice promenade) and they are changed according seasons of the year. The most delicate are kept in a greenhouse (not public).

Honky Tonk

by Lorro about Live music & shows

The 2 floor bar Honky Tonk is one of the well known bars in Madrid for live music and coctails. There is also a restaurant next store specializing in grilled meats. Upstairs is a nice posh/retro bar serving various coctails and downstairs is a painted-black concert bar with live bands many nights of the week. Style to be found is generally Rock, Blues and Country. The concerts usually start around 1am and afterwards a dj spins classic and newer rock tunes till 5am.
The last time I was there we saw a local band called "Los Parple" who are a fun band covering the songs of the legendary Deep Purple. Fun concert, crowd was into it and the band rocked. Relaxed but nice.
