Plaza Mayor jewel

by Ceashells about Petit Palace Mayor Plaza

We discovered this hotel when we were sight seeing on the cobblestone streets to the Plaza Mayor. I looked up and saw the balconies and thought it would be lovely to just watch the people below from there. So I booked two nights on our last leg of our Madrid stay. I was not disappointed. The Petit Palace Mayor is a boutique hotel located at calle Mayor 46, one of the entrances to the Plaza Mayor, just a few steps from the Puerta del Sol, near the major museums and tourist sights.
Many Tapas bars and cafes in the area and a wonderful candy/cookie store right out the front door and several paces away. I will definitely stay again. Very modern and wonderful bathroom, balconies, very quiet at night, free wi fi and free laptop in each room.
Double doors to the elevators ( nice to have) and free coffee and juice in the lobby. I felt safe in the comings and goings because the front door is locked at all times. You must be buzzed in by the staff, which is there 24 hours a day.

I´m not sure but I think there isn´t any at Gran Vía, or inmediately nearby. There are some good jazzclubs in Madrid, like: Segundo Jazz Club at Comandante Zorita nº8,El Junco at Plaza Santa Barbara nº10 (open untill very late),Sala Clamores in the corner of Calle Alburquerque and Calle de Palafox ... And then there is of course Talavera Jazz Festival for those interested in Jazz in the town of Talavera de la Reina, very near to Madrid, starting 16th and ending the 24th of July 2010.

Travel Tips for Madrid

wine

by ger4444

when in a restaurant you have the aperativo, that can be a sherry. Whine is usually served at the main course. Spain is famous for its wines. Whines of quality have the classifiacion DO (denominacion origine) Vino de la Tiera is under the norm and vieno de mesa is the lowest quality. Cavas has two sorts, brut (dry) and semi-seco (half sweet). at the whine etiquet you find the age of the wine , cosecha means the wine is young and therefore not expensive. The wines are blanco (white) and seco (dry) or dulce (sweet), rosado (rose) and a tinto is a red whine

Warm winter or not?

by PALLINA

I have always been told that Madrid has an awful weather, cold in winter and hot in summer. There are two choices: or those people never experienced the Emilia Romagna weather or I was very lucky in Madrid. It was sunny and the sky was BLUE, temperature was about 10°, 5 days long. At midday you can even have lunch outside! So my clothing and shoes were completely wrong for the winter in Madrid!!!

San Lorenzo de El Escorial

Just one hour north-west of Madrid by bus or train.

The palace was designed between 1562 and 1584 by Renaissance master-architect Juan de Herrera, on the orders of Felipe II, who died there in 1598.

It includes a basilica, Felipe II's palace, the royal mausoleum, several art collections, a library and a museum
