Visiting Madrid in August

by buni

I will be visiting Madrid in August for 7 days and then going to Barcelona for another 7 days. I was wondering which bus to take to Barcelona and how long it would take to get from our hotel, Petit Palace Plaza del Carmen, to the bus station. I would appreciate any tips anyone could give me. Thanks in advance.

Two things:

If I were you, I'd take the plane, it's faster (of course) and many times much cheaper.

Regarding the bus:
www.estacionautobusesmadrid.com/frameset.html (Estación Sur de Autobuses)
www2.alsa.es/portal/index.asp (Alsa, the company tht covers Madrid-Barcelona); both webs are only in Spanish I think.

And regarding the taxi, it depends on the traffic, but August should be ok regarding the jams, but at least, just in case, 45 minutes in total, I mean, the taxi plus the time (short anyway) to find the platform.

Travel Tips for Madrid

Stretching out behind the Prado to the east is the wonderful gardens of the Parque del Retiro. These parks were once private royal gardens but are now opened to the public. It is a delightful place to relax, enjoy the beauty and get a snack as well. The Alfonso XII statue elegantly stands facing a pool which I'm sure will provide a cool retreat from summer heat. This beautiful attraction is publicized on almost all Madrid postcard racks and I believe every visitor has got a copy of it in his/her camera as well.

Madrid is full of cultural places to visit. Among the most importants are (you must go):

Museo del Prado
Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía
Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza

Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando

by xiquinho

St. Ferdinand Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Designed by Churriguera in the waning baroque years of the early 18th century, this little-known museum showcases 500 years of Spanish painting, from Ribera and Murillo to Sorolla and Zuloaga. The tapestries along the stairways are stunning. The same building houses the Instituto de Calcografía (Prints Institute), which sells limited-edition prints from original plates engraved by Spanish artists, including Goya. Check listings for classical and contemporary concerts in the small upstairs concert hall. COST: EUR3, free Wed. Tues.-Fri. 9-7, Sat.-Mon. 9-2:30.

Street Vendors - Musicians

by jamiesno about Street Vendors

As you can see from this picture many local musicians have their music for sale on the streets. You can sample it live and buy their music if you like.

The guy in this picture was selling his CD for $9 Euros.

I think this is a great way to buy some souviners personally. Probably get your picture taken with the musician while your at it :-)

Club havana

This was a small yet intimate bar whehe spanish and cuban music was played. It was decorated with Cuban flag and other Cuban items. Live music played throughout the night. Couples doing the samba was a highlight of our visit here. Casual
