Approaching Madrid
I will be staying for a couple of days near Madrid's Atocha railway station. That is not a very long walk to Plaza Mayor and other attractions in the center of the city.
Can someone recommend a few good and reasonably priced restaurants and tapas bars in this area?

Hi! Around Playa Mayor, the speciality is for Calamari Bocaddiloes - there are quite a few places that serve this treat.
Just off Sol is Calle Victoria, where there are some nice tapas bars/ restaurants. I particularly enjoyed Casa del Abuelo, which specialises in prawns!

Plaza Santa Ana and nearby has a bunch of good Tapas Places. About 3/4 of the way for Atocha to Plaza Mayor.
After resting one night, and charging the batteries, we decided to explore Madrid in another direction, with the intention to reach Plaza de Colón - dedicated to Christofer Columbus. Once getting there you might wanna think about visiting the Museum of Wax figures.

This wonderful art gallery does not get the attention that it deserves. The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum is on the same intersection as the more famous Prado but does not get nearly as many visitors. This is a shame because it is probably the second best art gallery in Spain and one of the best private collections in the world.
The collection includes paintings from all the major eras of Western paintings significant periods but I found that it's 20th century collection particularly strong. If you spending enough time in Madrid then this museum is a must.
El Cortes Ingles is a large department store close to Puerta del sol (actually it's a chain with departments all over Spain). This is the largest department store in Madrid offering many floors of clothes, electronics, cosmetics, you name it...
There is a nice food department in the basement.
El Cortes Ingles has now opened department stores in other countries such as Lisbon in Portugal which is now the largest Portuguese department store (and also considered as the most exclusive).
in general the people who gone to this cafe are tourist similar that my. is funny place and the attention is good, you can see stuff the different and famous artists. yes, informal cloths for the day in the night is prefer the cloths more formal
