Madrid Neighborhoods for apartment rental

by redpoint

Hi--I am planning a trip to Madrid in March with my family and am trying to find the best neighborhood for an apartment rental. Two years ago we rented an apartment in Barcelona and hated the neighborhood, so we don't want to make the same mistake again. We are looking for something that is not in the tourist hub. In Barcelona we were close to Las Ramblas. In retrospect, we should have stayed in Gracia.

We want an area that isn't too far out, isn't too touristy, is safe, beautiful. How is Arguelles? Is it too far out? La Latina sounds nice but is it overwhelmingly touristy? Salamanca--is that too far out, also? We live in New York, and I am imagining Salamanca is like the Upper East Side of Madrid, not necessarily the most exciting place to stay. We aren't into boutique stores and overpriced restaurants. We need restaurants we will be happy to bring the kids into.

Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks so much.

We're over 60 and therefore not into nightclubs and nor are we expensive eating outers. Stayed for 4 nights in the Sol area of Madrid and the main places to see were almost walking distance - well they were walking distance as that's how we got around most of the time. Plenty of cheaper eateries, with some help we found a supermarket and then topped up at local shops. Narrow streets with plenty of character in the area. If its any help we stayed at an appartment hotel - http://www.atprincipe11.com/ - just a corridor leading off a one way small street, an ancient elevator and then great rooms with everything we needed for a 4 night stay.

Barrio de Salamanca is very quiet at night, and not toof far from the city centre, about 15 ms. by metro, but it's more expensive; Argüelles is good too, about 15 mins. walking to Callao square

I spent 5 wks in Spain studying Spanish at a language center - Eurocentres. This was an intensive language program that greatly improved my Spanish skills. There are programs of varying lengths and levels to accomodate anyone's needs. I got the chance to make friends with people from around the world to share my experiences in Spain. If you have the time and are interested in improving your language skills, I highly recommend it.

February - La Carnival

by Danalia

La Carnival

The Carnival take place in the barrios of Madrid, for several days. You can see, again, parades, people with costume, fancy dresses, masks. Lots of happiness and fun

For the exact dates it is better to take a look at www.guiadelocio.com/madrid or just buy it (guia del ocio) its cost 1 euro and its gives all information necessary.

Edificio Metropolis

by ruki

This beautiful building is one of Madrid's head of former insurance company. The Metropolis Building is an exquisite piece of architecture. The summit of building was originally crowned with phoenix but 1975 Metropolis bought the building and crested the apex with statue of victory in the place of the phoenix. The statue of victory – the roman goddess Victoria - was designed by Federico Valera.

El Corte Ingles

by crmeers about Department Stores

This was a very fun place to shop at. It was the Spanish vesion of most likely a Sears.
It was very large, with about 5 floors, and each floor was very large.
One cool feature I thought was that in the basement was a grocery store. Anything and everything.
Mostly clothing. You can spend as much as you want.

Santa Ana / Huertas

by aeroarce about Most touristic

At the Sorroundings of Plaza Santa Ana and Calle Huertas. Here you can find people around their 30s, it's a high market area (prices are high for students to pub in this area) you have from Irish Pubs to theatre-cafes, live Jazz performances, Tapas and even a Hawaian Restaurant. Well dresed and leave your snickers in your backpack.
