Luggage Check At Atocha Station?

by asaustrup

I might have a 3-4 hour layover at Atocha station and wanted to check my bags and walk around to see the sights. Are there lockers or a baggage check at Atocha?

Is there a restaurant with turtles in the area?

As always, thanks for the help.

Arne

There are automated lockers of 3 different sizes where you can leave your bags, pay for the first day and get a coded ticket which you will use to open the locker and get your things once you have entered the code. They are watched over by a security guard with a security scanner for added protection.

- Small is 2.40 euros a day (volume less than 0.15m)
- Single space is 3.00 euros a day (volume 0.15m to 0.25m)
- Double space is 4.50 euros a day (volume 0.25m to 0.40m)

Thanks for the reponses on the luggage storage.

Pedmar, I had heard that there was some kind of restaurant around Atocha with a display of turles. Thanks to VT, I now know that there is a tropical garden within the station with a water pool with turtles and there are restaurants in the area.

Sounds cool and we will check it out.

Cheers,

Arne

Travel Tips for Madrid

Plaza

by iandsmith

Palacio Real would be the one thing if I had to make a choice. Although the exterior is bland, inside is over-the-top and beyond.
This picture is of what might have been. The statues shown here are of the old Spanish kings and were to have been placed atop the palace but they were too heavy and thus ended up in the nearby park. I loved Estacion de Atocha. The main international train terminal is not what you'd expect. It features a palm garden right in the middle.
Inaugurated in 1851, the garden was inserted in 1980 when the station was upgraded.

Urgency

by ger4444

Useful expressions when in urgency. Help: Soccoro - Stop: pare - Call a doctor: llame a un medico - call an ambulance: llame a un ambulancio - call the police: llame a la policia - where is the hospital: donde esta el hospital. The number for emergency is 112. ask for policia or ambulancia. The fist aid is called urgancias. If there is no urgency you can get a recipe discribed by the pharmacy. you can recognise them by the green cross, and there are many of them in town.

Snow is not usual, but...

by SirRichard

... it snows 1 or 2 days a year. Generally in January or February. So if U come in winter, expect temperatures of -3 to 15ºC.
Anyway, if U like skiing, you can always go to the "Sierra", about 80 kms from the centre, where you'll find a few skii stations.

Cine Ideal

by agarcia

Sunday evenings would not be the same without Ideal Cinemas. They have a great selection of international cinema, and they play the movies in the original soundtrack with subtitles... a kindness not often seen in many other Spanish theaters. Besides, the building itself is quite beautiful AND it's near some interesting nightclubs and pubs of Sol area. Many reasons for visiting the place, isn't it? ;-)
