Pasteleria La Mallorquina in Madrid, Spain
Hi fellow VT's. I will be visiting Spain this fall - 4 nights in Madrid and 3 nights in Barcelona. Arriving in Madrid late morning on Saturday, so will spend Saturday afternoon and evening, as well as all of Sunday seeing Madrid. Then on Monday and Tuesday planning day trips to Segovia and Toledo. Wednesday is the 3 hr AVE train to Barcelona - and flying home from BCN on Saturday.
Question is: do we take the early morning Madrid-Barcelona train and spend most of Wednesday in Barcelona (with a possible side trip to Montserrat)OR take the latest train and spend that day seeing more of Madrid??
Opinions??? Advice??? Thanks!!!
I have just been to both places last month and find that the equal time will be great if you love art, musuems, and culture. There is plenty to do in both cities and it will take a day each to learn how to get around. The side trip will take a day to Montserrat if taking public transportation as there is limited bus times to go there and back. If by car, you can get there within the hour as it is like 40 km from BCN. The longer I stayed in either city, the more I liked it except of all the warnings of theft and pickpockets. Knowing that, I left everything in the hotel safe that I did not need and just enough pocket money to get around. I had a good time and if going there in the summer there are many events going on. Find them and have fun with the locals. One of the best times I had was with a bicycle in Barcelona 10 euros a day . I covered alot of ground and BCN is bicycle friendly. Enjoy Spain and watch your pockets, cheers Tommy x
I just want to make a kind correction to the comment about Montserrat above: there are many trains from Barcelona, about every 30 minutes, so going there for half a day is not a problem using public transport (IMO train+funicular or cable car is more scenic and fun than bus or car, and takes the same time)

Maybe one of the most famous Spanish deserts.
Ingredients
1 cup white sugar
3 eggs
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
In a medium saucepan over medium-low heat, melt sugar until liquefied and golden in color. Carefully pour hot syrup into a 9 inch round glass baking dish, turning the dish to evenly coat the bottom and sides. Set aside.
In a large bowl, beat eggs. Beat in condensed milk, evaporated milk and vanilla until smooth. Pour egg mixture into baking dish. Cover with aluminum foil.
Bake in preheated oven 60 minutes. Let cool completely.
To serve, carefully invert on serving plate with edges when completely cool.
Madrid has siesta time between 2 and 5 pm. Then the shops are clsed. Not all of them, the big shops like Court Ingles are open all day. The siesta is used to have dinner and to do house hold tasks, so not everyone is actually sleeping during the siesta. And workers, such as construction workers don’t take a siesta at all.
As you have read before, during my 31 & 32 birthdays, my friends, my wife and even me were drinking good wine and eating 'Tapas' in some places of Avila. This city is rather little and, of course, chepaer than Madrid.
The following year, we will not repeat the same hard experience: we will move to Zamora' 2.003, so if you are interested on have a nice party and enjoy with me and my friends, don't miss your time and send me a message to put in contact with you!
Next Birthday's Party: March 1st, 2.003.
I went out with friends from Madrid, and this was one of the places they suggested. It is located in a nice mansion, on top is also a restaurant. You have a very nice garden there, you can enjoy your drinks under trees. Inside on ground floor there is a dance floor with a pleasant mix of music, on second floor people just drink and watch :). It has the reputation of being a bit of a posh place. There is a face control, so dress properly. People are going there between 1 and 4 a.m. Age range when I was there was between 25 up to 60 something (sic :)! - in Austria you usually do not see grey haired men looking for a second chance in a bar like this :) - they prefer it calmer here :)) An incredible high number of gents I saw there was wearing either Ralph Lauren, Lacoste or Hilfiger shirts - the ladies the shorter the better ;)
