Madrid First Timers
by msgeorgia
I am going to travel with my 2 kids, ages 16 and 11. Haven't stayed in a hostel before, read the short comment you have regarding Hostel Sta Cruz, can you tell me more about it? I tried to call them directly, the person I talked to said that reservations are only made by fax or mail. Don't they have an e-mail address? No feedback on Travelocity either for people that have stayed here in the past, need more information if possible. Hope to see more pictures, too.

Hi,
We have been staying in Hostal Victoria in Madrid. It was centrally located, clean and quiet. We took the room for 3 which was quite spacious.
We made our reservation via Internet on their web site. It was very inexpensive comparing to other places.
See my Madrid pages for details, and web site name.

funny. on the Hostal Santa Cruz web site it seems they have a contact by email. Have you tried sending them an email ?

In Spain, I do find you get some strange answers to perfectly formed questions. Sometimes the person answering the question has no idea what on earth you are talking about but still gives a serious considered answer which you take as a serious considered answer !!

What do you mean by "read the short comment YOU have"? In this forum, you are "talking" to the entire community of VT members. If you read someone's tip on Madrid, how is the person to know you are trying to speak to that particular VT member? You would need to send them a VT mail directly! Could be this tip (from ALANinWORCS69) which refers to the Hostal (note spelling) Santa Cruz as being in the same building as the Hostal Cruz Sol: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/a56a6/3ff84/3/.
If you have actually spoken to someone at the hostal and they told you specifically that "reservations are only made by fax or mail", then either they were including e-mail in "mail" (info@hostalsantacruz.com - from website www.hostalsantacruz.com), or perhaps they meant exactly what they said: i.e. despite having an e-mail address they may prefer bookings by fax or post - if you spoke to them they would have been the best people to ask.
For the rest, you can easily google for reviews e.g.

In Spain, we use to say "mail" when we are talking about "email".
Enjoy Madrid!!

I haven't been in the Sta Cruz, but The Hostal in which I stayed is more central, as it is between Sol and Plaza Mayor , the principal squares of Madrid.they have an homepage http://hostal-madrid.info. they have all the facilities :private bath with haidryer, tv,telephone, safe, wifi, lift in the building.
If you plan to stay several days I would choose an apartment. It will come out cheaper and more comfortable for your childs. The apartments of the Hostal madrid are quite nice : see them in their page. they are in the same building or in the building behind the Hostal. You can book directly by e-mail.
You'll not need to take the metro at all.
cheers

Food
by ger4444
Madrilenes are used to spend their time moslty out side doors at the pubs, tapas bars and restauarants with their family, friends or co-workers. The many local pictorseque tabernas arevery popular amongst the locals and amongst them are the eldest ones in Europe. Service is often very fast and the quality of the food is -- either if the restaurant is a cheap one or expensive one -- supurb. There are hundreds of bistro's and restaurants varying from cheap ones where you can have a dinner for about 5 euro upto one of the best restaurants in Europe. Nowadays Asians are running some of the more popular restaurants in chueca as well Bask people are known as the best coocks in Madrid. Of course there also fast food restaurants, like the international ones but also the spanish ones like Pans and Co or Telechef. In the bistro you willmostly find the menu, which is meant as the dish of the day, and is cheap. In the restaurant you get the carta, which is the list of specialties, starting with the sopas (soups) ensalades (salads), tortillas (omlets), verduras (vetgetables), plato principal (main dish: meat or fish) and the postre (desert)
THE VALLEY of the FALLEN (...
by chrissyalex
THE VALLEY of the FALLEN ( Santa Cruz del Valle los Caidos) This cross was built as a memorial to those who had died in the Civil War. This cross is enormous and underneath it is a basilica that is carved deeply into the rock. There are beautiful views of the pine forests from this monument. The day I went there, there was strange weather. It was raining and then sunny, raining and then sunny off and on. You can see this cross from quite a distance before you get there and as we first saw it, there were dark clouds with sun shining throug hall around and it just seemed kind of chilling.

The nightlife in Madrid
by jacob_m
The nightlife in Madrid is very special, almost everybody goes out irrespective of age. The nightlife normally starts around midnight and can go on until morning (9 am). There are according to some magazines about 30.000 bars in Madrid. Buy the guide Guia del Ocio and read what is on at the moment.
