The Hostal Tijcal II (3* Hostal) is on two floors of a building with very good security and a lift. The building is clean, well kept, neat and attractive. The whole place has been renovated fairly recently from appearances. The location is very central, less than 5 minutes walk from Plaza Sol, a slightly longer stroll to Plaza Mayor. The immediate neighbourhood itself a bit 'iffy' but not at all uncomfortable really. There are street walkers - regulars that I recognized by sight easily by the third day - but no blatant or overt crime. The local plaza Jacinto Benavente, is full of life and comfortable to walk even in the evening. On Friday night I returned after midnight (following a small VT Meet) and the street was more alive than in the afternoon! The hostal is apparently made up of the 2nd and 3rd floors of three buildings. The hallways are long and have many sharp angles. All are well covered by internal security cameras. The room I was in is also made up of angles. The bathroom itself is triangular and the shower a sort of parallelogram, but not quite - one wall was too short :) It was comfortably sized for a single. The room was in the back, the window on what was once an enclosed patio, now a dark backyard. The room was quiet except for the restaurant workers on the ground floor who use it for a storage facility, but no noise from the street which was nice. Safe to sleep with the window open, which pleased me very much. Everything is brand new, well kept and clean. The bed is very comfortable, a 3/4 rather than a small single, the linens changed every two days. The room also has a small wall mounted desk and chair. The bathroom supplied with 2 towels, soap, shampoo, comb and shoe shine sponge. Plenty of good hot water for the shower at all hours. The water glass in the bathroom is a disposable plastic cup replaced each day. The shower stall is of comfortable size and with a floor level side board for storing shampoo and such. There is a TV in the room and radiators. Good overhead lighting and a good strong wall mounted bed lamp. The telephone is attached to the headboard and drove me nuts. The handset kept falling off every time I moved in bed. Sorry my photos didn't turn out too well except for the funny angled hallways. There is a safe in the room and air conditioning, but one is charged extra to use these. Actually though they told me in advance that I would have to pay extra for the safe, in the end they didn't add the charge. I had no need to use the a-c. The reception was all right. Not the best, but certainly professional. There is a computer in the reception area that was out of order on my arrival. When I inquired about a computer cafe or shop the person at the desk claimed he didn't know any. Within the day I had discovered 4 of them within 2 streets of the hostal :) When the hostal's own computer was fixed, the rate for its use was standard for Madrid. It had a good fast connection. A continental breakfast served in the room is offered for Euro3.50. I found going to the corner coffee shop more worthwhile.
Best location for visiting the city. Centrally located and with easy transportation to all more distant sites. New, clean, well kept.
