Great Location... and good value

We stayed 2 nights at Hostal TIJCAL I, and the stay had good and bad points....

On the good hand the location was amazing, just through one of the arches leading out of Plaza Major... you could walk to the Royal Palace in about 10 minutes, to Puerto Del Sol in 5 minutes, and to the Prado in about 30 minutes. This central historical area was much prettier than staying at one of the many budget hotels on Gran Via for example. The staff were very helpful, with good English, and with a 24 hour reception. The decor was plain and simple, and well-maintained.

Bad points were I was unlucky to get a tiny room without a window, which was horribly stuffy and smelly, even with the air conditioning, but it was very quiet and let you sleep without being kept awake by the street cleaners or daylight... whereas my friends had a lovely little balcony, but it was very noisy with the window open.

There was a small lift up to the hostal reception on the 2nd floor, or you can climb the treacherous well-worn stairs if you're feeling energetic.

Unique Quality: Basically I would recommend it if you're looking a cheap room in the best area of town.. but don't expect 5* facilities.. but what do you expect for 30 Euros per person per night! And try to request a balcony...

More like a 3 star than a Hostal

This Hostal was just steps away from Plaza Mayor, because of its location I thought it would be pretty noisy but surprisingly it wasnt, the reception area is on the 4th floor of the building and the rooms are very clean and even well decorated. The reception area is always open and the guy there named Saul is very helpful. It didnt look or feel like a Hostal at all, I've been to a lot of 3 star Hotels in Europe that wasnt as nice as this Hostal. For under $60 Euros/night it definitely was a great deal. Only thing kinda weird that I noticed was that the bathtub was really really small (but that didnt stop me from taking a bath! LOL).

They also have information on tours that you can take while in the city, you can actually purchase them in the reception area for the same price that the tour operators charge. You can store your luggage with them too if you check out and want to stay a while more or if you arrive early.

Unique Quality: Steps away from Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol and the Sol Metro Station, and very clean. They also gave us a nice calendar on check out. :)

Hostal Tijcal **

This little pension is wonderfully located in between Plaza Mayor and Sol. Recently refurbished, friendly staff, the rooms are clean and medium size. The bathrooms are a little small.

Unique Quality: Double room 60 euros

I will be visiting madrid for the first time this summer and I was looking a possibly staying at the hostal Tijcal.

I've checked the net and have seen some positive feedback. Just wondering if this is a decent place to stay and a good location???

Any other suggestions for someone on a budget??
