Better area to stay in?

by fscat

Where would people familiar with Madrid recommend someone to stay: Near the Royal Palace or closer to El Prado and Plaza Mayor? I want to stay close to all the sights and be close to a lot of good restaurants. Thanks.

You are actually closer to Plaza Mayor from the Palacio Real (less than 10 minutes walking) than from El Prado (it will take about 20 minutes).

There are good restaurants scattered around all the city center.

It will really depend on the specific addresses, some streets may be noisier, etc.

As Pedro mentioned, the metro is so efficient as long as you are in the City center you will be reasonably close to things. The problem with the area right around the Prado is that there is not a metro stop that is very close. Botin (a well known restaurant that is very good, but frequented by us tourists) is by Plaza Major. But you can find great places to eat all over. There seem to be more tapas, early dinner places between Plaza Santa Ana and Plaza Major (c/Barcelona). There are also some great asadors (for grilled meats). I like to stay at the Emperador on Gran Via as it has a roof top pool, quite refreshing in the hot summer. Karl

Travel Tips for Madrid

A good way to cool off!

by laura4n8

We were hot and worn out and just needed something cool to help us out. We found a solution in a fountain! We were the only ones who thought of this idea. When we walked up to this fountain, two guys were just climbing out after a full-on swim! We just put our feet in ... and it sure felt good!

So Many Choices

Plaza Mayor by is one of the overpriced places you will probably visit while in Madrid. You are better off people watching and ordering una cafe. Your best bet is to find smaller restaurants or cafes away from the tourist traps that the locals usually visit. If you venture into any cafe always order Cervesa or Copa de Vino Blanco . You will always get small appetizers accompanied by your drink. Take a chance and try the local cuisne you might find something you like.

Bars and cafes

by SirRichard

They say we have the highest rate of bars per habitants in all Europe!! (I think it's in all the world). In the city center you will find 3 or 4 bars in every block. Always full for breakfasts, tapas, a quick beer, bocadillos, another coffee...
Don't feel ashamed of throwing used tissues or olive bones to the floor, as it is a normal way of acting (and I don't feel very comfortable about that!). Anyway, they usually clean the floor quite often.

Serrano 41- awesome

by Lizchiq about Serrano41

This was our typical Thursday or Friday night spot when I studied abroad in Spain. As the local madrilenos say, it's "lleno de pijos" which means "full of snobs"...
The crowd was an under-30, hip, well-dressed and attractive crowd.
Make friends with the bouncers and never pay cover and get free drinks. See if Mario still works there. Typical "nice going out" attire should do the trick.
