bus map

by gezergirl

I usually prefer taking the bus in cities I visit, rather than the metro, so I can see the views. Where can I get the Madrid bus map, either online or in the city itself?

We used the tourist Hop on Hop off bus in Madrid, which suited us better than te service buses, but i guess it depends on what you're after/

Suggested EMT lines (urban buses):
#27 from Embajadores to Plaza de Castilla. South-North city views.
#1 from Moncloa to Prosperidad: West-East city views.
#C1 or C2 aka Circular. Surrounding downtown.
Buy a METROBUS pass (10 rides for €9) valid for Metro and city buses. On sale in Metro, tobacconist's and newspaper kiosks (not on buses).

Travel Tips for Madrid

Shops azulejos

by gmg61

In the old part of the town, mostly around Plaza de Santa Ana, shops and bars and restaurants have often façades decorated with tiles very similar to the portuguese azulejos. But, unlike Portugal, the are not only blue and white. The colors vary and so do the themes opf the drawings.
Here are some of the pictures of these azulejos I took in Madrid. Only a few examples, but walking around in a nice day you'll see plenty of them.

King size curved tiles cookies

by Danalia

Ingredients :

For 8 large 'curved tiles' cookies :
2 eggs
125 grams (a 'small' 1/4 pound) caster sugar + 1 vanilla flavoured sugar bag
125 grams flaked almonds
15 grams (1 soupspoon)wheat flour

Direction :
1/ Heat the oven (390°F).
2/ In a salad bowl, blend the 2 sugar types with the flour and the almonds.
3/ Add the beaten eggs (as if you were preparing an omelette) and whisk the mixture during 2 minutes.
4/ on a non adhesive (teflon coated)cooking plate or on a cooking paper, put some prepared mixture so that you make 2 or 3 large circles of 10 cenimeter (4 inches) diameter each.
5/ Put in the heated oven and get them out when they are browned. with a metal spatula, put them on their middle on a round stick (such as a pastry roller)while they are still hot so that they bind themselves.
6/ Repeat 5/ several times up to exhausting the cookie pastry.

Keep the cookies in a dry box when they are cold and hard.

Carabeneros Flamenco

by seasonedveteran about Flamenco - Carboneros Bar

Through the hostel discount, I sat and watched the timeless spanish art of flamenco for the first time. Heard much prior, and definately was not disappointed. The sounds that throbs your heart, the passion the spanish eyes is simply a must when in Madrid. only cost 25 euros with a drink.
It caters to tourists, but dont be turned off by that. Very good i think.

It sounds very much like the Arabic Call to Prayers you hear in the Arab world. or like a long drawn out beautiful recitation. But here, the passion is amazing. there was like 3 different female dancers, and one male dancer, who stole the show with his power and charisma. The females however, won my heart with their desperate pleas, beautiful voices.
